So I’m in the market for a newer used truck and I have an opportunity to buy a Western Star for a what seems to be a good price but it’s a 560 hp DD16 with 3.08 gear ratio with DT12 transmission and I will primarily be doing general freight via 53’ Flatbed so will be 70-80k most of the time also I will be doing mostly Texas to Texas so mostly flat-ish highway but i feel this engine may be too powerful so I guess my question is 560hp DD16 too much how would this affect and do you guys have any other trucks/engines that you like for this kind of work I’m open to all opinions Thank you in advance

I would prefer the more horsepower,it will probably lower your mpg a little but you'll have the hp when you need it.
JohnAyala999 Thanks this. -
I agree, go big or go home. I thought bigger was better in Texas???

The only problem with a DD16 is you will likely be over the 12,000 steer and need special tires (at 12,500) and I think weight class/permits.

Oh wow I never thought of that. so glad you brought that up

The emission systems need heat to work properly. Power is good but making the engine pull hard through out the day is good for it.

Dd16 is only 150 ish lbs heavier but needs a stouter driveline that where the additional weight comes from.. with 3.08 it should be in its torque band . PS do a ecm download to see problems and lifetime fuel economy.

Ha ha that definitely is a good thing to think aboutBlagoje Thanks this.
