Man beaten, robbed during date

A 48-year-old Ferndale man was beaten, choked with a belt and robbed Thursday night by two men, one dressed as a transvestite, who attacked him with a hammer and the butt of a handgun during what the victim thought would be a date arranged by an online gay dating service, police said.The two took items from the victim's home and stole money from his bank account by using his ATM card before fleeing in a dark-colored Cadillac, according to Ferndale police.

Through bank surveillance photos and phone records, police arrested one suspect and identified the second, who dressed in woman's clothing, Lt. William Wilson said.

"We're looking for Johnnie Clarence Bryant, a black male who is 29 (years old) and may be dressed in a long wig and woman's clothing," Wilson said today.

"This man is considered armed and dangerous, and citizens should not attempt to approach or apprehend him. We're hoping he turns himself in to our department. Both suspects have extensive criminal histories," Wilson said.

The victim, while being treated at Beaumont Hospital early Friday, told police he'd had one date with the arrested man two weeks ago and their second date began about 10:30 p.m. Thursday at the victim's home, Wilson said. In the course of the second date, the arrested man went to his car and returned with the man police believe is Bryant, dressed as a transvestite, Wilson said.

After attacking the resident, "they stole the victim's ATM card and made him divulge his PIN (personal identification number). While the first suspect stayed with the victim, the second one (in transvestite attire) went out to use the ATM. He returned angry that there was a $100 withdrawal limit to the card," Wilson said. The duo then fled in the Cadillac, he said.

Using bank photos, telephone records and other evidence, Ferndale police ' assisted by the Oakland County NET team and U.S. Marshal's Office ' arrested the first suspect at 4:30 a.m. Saturday at a home on Hogarth St. in Detroit, Wilson said. That man is in custody while Ferndale police seek warrants to file charges and seek the second suspect, Wilson said.
