I recently had the DOT physical and failed. My blood sugar is high:biggrin_25513: While I anticipated this could happen because I am a meager 350 pounds and sit behind a desk all day, I need to know should I discuss this with the recruiter I have been talking to?

My plan was to try start in May, but now it seems that needs pushed back. I go in for retesting and doing the DOT again in 6 weeks. Should I simply let the recruiter know this? Or should I give a different reason and set up my start date in June? I don't want to jeopardize my situation any.

Starting in June will actually let me finish up the year at the job I am currently at. It will also allow me to take my trip to Charlotte for the Coca Cola 600 on Memorial Day and My wife's birthday is close to that as well. Then there will be nothing pulling me home until August. I can get my school and company training out of the way and done before then.

Any advice it greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance...

Well; if you don't they will figure that out when you get there. Not to mention that much weight will flag you for sleep apnea. Co's are really cracking down on drivers health issues. Don't take this wrong I am not coming down on you for your weight. Just pointing out you will be a red flag when they see you. You will have to pass a DOT with them.

    Don't worry I'm thick skinned...:biggrin_255:

I do realize that and I've made the decision to get things in order before its too late.

I wanted to get the DOT here just to make sure I can pass it. I absolutely refuse to walk into the place not knowing where I stand as far as my health is concerned. I don't want to be that guy who quits a job and gets there and they send me home because I stupidly didn't know what was going on with my health. I think that I can be proactive and be more prepared. I think that from today till June I can be getting things in order and take control.

Thanks! I don't get my feelings hurt like some do.
I really do appreciate the advice tho!

I first want to congradulate you on being proactive instead of reactive! That is a great example of your integrity. I can tell you from personal experience that some changes in my eating habits brought my blood sugar down. I also dropped another 30lbs as a bonus.

I moved away from white sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and white flour. Replaced those with whole grains and sprouted grains(you may have to go to a health food store for the sprouted grains). I also rid myself of soda, both diet and regular. I cut out processed food and eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies. I also drink about a gallon of water each day.

It seems like a huge proccess in the beginning. I can say that once I made it my habit(not a diet) it is a great feeling. I also know it has made my mind healthier and my moods better just by feeding body correctly.

Wishing you the best in your quest!

I'm sorry and I don't mean to be mean but....ARE YOU SERIOUS?

You are going to drop approximately 150+ pounds by June?
You are going to get your diabetes/blood sugar "fixed" by June?
And going to a Cup Race is even a concern?
    WHAT are you thinking?

PLEASE do all of the motoring public a favor and just stay behind your desk at least until it's safe for everyone for you to even restart considering becoming a driver.

First off I don't mean to be mean, but where did I say I was losing 150 pounds? Listen I never said it would all be fixed by June! I think that 50lbs can be done in no time. With some will power and dieting correctly. June is when I said I hope to do my training! If not I will make needed adjustments.

I can guarantee there are plenty of drivers out there lots more dangerous than I will ever be!

Am I going to fix my blood sugar? Well, following my doctor's advice I beleive I can! Exersize and diet! Really is it that tough? If my doctor thinks it is doable no offense, but I think I will follow his lead.

And YES a Cup race is a concern. It is an event I DRIVE to every year! Already have tickets so I need to be there!

:biggrin_2559:Oh and thanks for the great advice!

Thank you for you added info here! This is the type of info and advice I am looking for. Unlike the previous post I replied to. I am no idiot and I don't take kindly when spoken to like one, but then again I'm getting into trucking. I normally I take things with a grain of salt! Not often, but sometimes I need to let people know a few things. lol

I've been reading up on things and the toughest thing will be giving up the soda or pop as we in PA like to call it. That is my nemisis. I've moved to diet, but now reading more it really doesn't matter. I just read that even simple black coffee can bump up your numbers. Caffiene can cause things to elevate. So I am becoming a crazy water drinker and going to start a work out regimin for the next 6 weeks till my next appointment. I think that alone and I meet with a dietician this week to get some help for foods to eat. I think it can be done! I've got a total of 11 weeks. So I think this is doable!

    Thanks a gain!

for your "diet" hindsy do as curtainvan says and eliminate all white food. then concentrate on fiber foods. fresh fruits and veggies have the most, whole grains, and fiber fortified cereals are the back bone. plenty of water too, otherwise you'll become constipated. plus it'll help if you have hemroids from sitting all day.

the way i weaned myself off caffeine, was to do just that, cut out one soda a day until i was down to nothing. then wait a day or two for the 2am headache. drink a 1/3 of a small can, marvel at how fast the headache disappears, and then wait 2 more days. it shouldn't come back, but if it does, another little bit to take the edge off and you should be good. i've been caffeine free now for almost 5 years.

this next and last tip is my personal favourite. never carry any dollar bills in your wallet or pocket. if you do, it's so easy to whip one out every time you pass a vending machine to buy that one soda or chips.

can't buy it, if you don't have it. ;)

    good luck!
