My doctor prescribed me olanzapine every night for my mood swings, anxiety ect. Just wondering would this effect my CDL journey before I dive straight in is there anything I should worry about regarding meds?

I’m not really familiar with the gray area of the laws surrounding this and your CDL…but I can just tell you based on having many people throughout my life become addicted to that stuff, it’s best to avoid it altogether if you can. Highly addictive. Once you start down that road, it’s really hard to get off. You should probably evaluate your overall health. If there’s other reasons why you’re having anxiety and sleep problems; are you drinking a lot, are you sleep deprived, are you eating crappy all the time, could you lose some weight? No judgement, just really think twice before bringing in benzos. They might be a temporary fix, but long-term turn your life into an absolute living hell

Yes it could affect your journey very much.

First talk with your prescribing physician and ask it they would clear you to drive a commercial vehicle. If they agree to clear you to drive (accept liability) have them produce a letter saying so.

Next hurdle is to find a DOT Dr willing to issue you a medical certificate allowing you to drive. They may accept your physician’s letter and clear you but they are not obligated to.

Next assuming you have a med card now is to find a company that will hire you. Some companies have their own list of medications that they ban. Some companies will make you get another physical via their company contracted Dr. They may or may not pass you if they don’t like the medication.

Some companies could care less and if you have a med card you’re good to go.

Personally I wouldn’t hire you because of the side effects of that particular medication.

“Common side effects include: feeling sleepy, feeling dizzy” That’s a no go for me right there, just not worth the risk. Regardless, there’s likely hundreds if not thousands of companies who probably wouldn’t care about it.

Not an outright banned medication but it’ll probably be a little challenging getting the med card and finding employment.

Good luck, I got issues too but deal with it without medication :)

Most medications ending with “pine” are a sleep aid in smaller doses. This is why you will always see drowsiness as side effect.

I was not feeling well yesterday evening and went to sleep in my easy chair when you tagged me.

The truth? In all honesty as far as I know this medication will not show up on the 9 things tested in a DOT urine test. So chances are you could take this med and your carrier never know. The real question is why would you want to operate a large CMV taking such a medication? I am not going to say you can do it or can't. I am only going to say the ONLY way you will ever get an ME to approve you taking this med is to show you are acclimated to it and are stable. Even then the chances are not good you will do so.

Drug tests generally don't test for medications that are not derivatives of barbiturates, amphetamines, THC, "party drugs". They aren't screening for high BP, chemo, etc.
