Hello there everyone,
I am from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Been an O/O for over 5 years. A month ago, my driver crashed my only truck 02 Volvo Vnl with cummens, and now its time to purchase a new truck. The Volvo has been really great with me, and I dont want to move away but cannot find a good deal. Therefore, i went to take a look at a 04 International 9400 with a cummins 13 spd. I need your advice on this truck, it has 850 000 KM ( not miles ) and listed for $23000. So please help me out on how these trucks are. I have owned freighliner columbia and FLD, both were not friendly with me.
Please advice me, and shed some light on this truck.

They are good trucks with good room to work on the engine. Parts are fairly reasonable and easy to get. The suspension is good and easy to work on. The International will be louder inside that a Volvo, mostly from wind noise, the ride won't be quite as good, and the cab will be prone to more side to side rocking, especially if you get a sky rise sleeper. I like them myself. The yellow 9400 in my trucking photos had over 1.3 million miles on it when that picture was made. Last I talked to one of the other drivers it had close to 1.6 million. Those trucks are slip seat turn around coast to coast.

I like the internationals. Solid truck, parts are decently priced. I'd put them over a freightliner anyday, under a KW or Pete, on par with Volvo but it's a tradeoff with volvo. Like Stranger said it's not as plush as the volvo but it's a more solid truck and much cheaper to work on

The Intl 9400's are not the prettiest girl at the dance, but they are solid performers. I have been around a lot of various brands, and the Internationals are good work trucks that, when taken care of, will make a person some money. Like was stated, they are fairly easy to work on and parts are readily available. They are louder and not quite as good in comfort as the newer fancy trucks, but they are not terrible either. I prefer the hi rise compared to the sky rise (condo) sleepers. They seem to be easier to keep warm or cool compared to the condo versions, but still provide very good space, especially the 72" models. Regarding the side to side rocking mentioned, I put on Air Tabs on the rear sides and top of my 9400 and it cuts out a quite a bit of that rocking in cross winds. How it does it, check with Air Tabs. I just know they do a decent job. I would take a 9400 any day over the newer Volvo's and FL's. Petes and KW's are the only other thing that will give the solid performance that the 9400's give, but you will pay more over the life on a KW or Pete. The 9400 is a good "working" man's truck. No big frills. It just gets the job done and, only in rare cases, will it be a money pit.

We've got 2 9400's and I like them. Good solid trucks I agree.
Much more comfortable than Shakers. -
I have the little brother (9200) and have enjoyed it. The 9400 is easier to get to the rear head for repairs than the 9200 which would be nice but overall I can't really complain about it. Good space inside. Easy to modify to your liking. I have a 72" condo with a dorm frige/freezer, 900watt microwave, 13" tv, room for hanging clothes, food and water stores, etc...... In the tool boxes I can carry extra parts and fliuds, hopper vibrator, plus enough tools to do just about any roadside repair I would ever tackle out there. Its not a plush Volvo ride but solid and parts are less expensive and many cross over with Freightliner and KW
.
BTW I have the Black=top N14 Turned to 1650Tq, 500HP with a stupid-10. Just wish it was a 13 but it works well. -
I had a 9400, one of the best trucks I ever owned. Wish I had not sold it.

I currently operate an '07 9400i with an '06 ISX. SOLID!
Customer service at both Cummins and IH dealers has been exceptional. I use Cummins for engine issues, and IH for all others. Generally when I know I need some type of service (other than basic oil and filter changes), I call ahead for appointment. Both have been very good at getting me in and out. I've only lost 3 productive days due to breakdown, and that was because the IH dealer had trouble getting parts several years ago when IH parts warehouse was on strike. If they would have had the parts in stock the downtime would have been less than 24hrs.
I will probably keep this truck till the wheels fall off, and then rebuild. -
Mine is an '06 and I will probably hold onto it for a long, long while as well. Heck, even rebuilding the truck would be cheaper and last longer than buying anything newer. I do pretty much the same as you regarding where I get repairs done. Will probably make a few changes in components when they need repaired, but will definately hold onto this truck.

I've driven several 9400's and had good luck with all of them. For the money they are hard to beat. The 72" pro sleeper gives you tons of room. As far as noise yes they are a little noisier but that can be solved with some weather stripping in the right places. I'd buy one over a Volvo anyday.
broncrider Thanks this.
