I'm sure this is a basic question but I'm just looking for ways other than entering a company training program to finance school. I'm in California and most of the schools are around 4k. This is reasonable but just doing my research before paying. Any government programs I should be aware of or that I can apply for? I'm currently employed in another field (finance) and want to move to trucking. Thanks!

Which city are you in or near? Might get some job leads if we know.

EVERY CDL school will find someone to finance CDL school. Half of trucking companies that hire newbies also offer Tuition Reimbursement. Don't go to CDL school until you find the job at the employer that fits you. If you have ANYTHING in your background that limits where you can work find the job first, not after CDL school.

I do not have any convictions that would matter that I am aware of. I did have a license suspension for excessive points over 20 years ago but have been fairly ticket free since getting it back in 2002. I'm 45, live near Hollywood and am interested in leaving finance to get into driving after seeing my stepfather do it for over 20 years. I do have one accident that I'm partially responsible for that falls off in May so I'll have a fully clean record then. Any thoughts on gigs to look into that are SoCal based would be appreciated. Thanks!

Several companies will hire you that aren't based in California, but hire California drivers.
One example is Pride Transport:
