I've had broke people try and give me advice about money a few times. Told all but 1 they were nuts. He simply said "don't do anything that I do or did"
I took him seriously

I would say it depends on who who work for and if you have a good dm.
When I started in 1988 things were much different, it was more of a brotherhood. Other drivers would go out of there way to help you, and companies treated there drivers very well for the most part. Some companies even had a waiting list to get hired.austinmike, tscottme, nextgentrucker and 3 others Thank this. -
Things were very different indeed. It's not that I think drivers simply don't care today, they know most drivers have phones, and help is a button away. Back then, we were all in the same boat, and you helped someone, because sure as heck, you would need it down the line. It was considered "part of the job", and yes, employers looked for that. One job I had, I went in face to face with whoever was on the door, and said, "I'm a natural born leeever puller, and you'd be a fool not to hire me",,well, that and good references, and was driving that very afternoon after a 5 minute "test drive". They could tell in 2 minutes if you knew what you were doing. Today, not so, you may never even SEE the boss, until you screw up, that is, and everything is logged electronically at the Pentagon. Different indeed. I remember back in the late 70s, UPS was the absolute utmost in driver pay. It was what all other job pay was based on, sort of. One never got a T/T job at UPS cold quarter. You can imagine my surprise seeing a recent tv ad for UPS looking for T/T drivers.austinmike and bryan21384 Thank this.

i agree with every thing you said!!! i have 200k in an acct for this endevor. i am thinking of putting 50k down on a 75k truck and just pay the rest off as fast as possible then just bank the money for a rainy day as there will be some rainy days. i don't have any problems with being frugal. that's where most O/O'S fail is saving money or having startup funds. this is why id'e rather buy my truck if things don't work out i can take my big shiny toy elsewhere. id'e never lease a truck from anyone that holds my balls they control everything and your nothing more than a seat warmer paying there bills until they starve you out of the trucks and give it to the next sucker. carriers prob make more off leasing trucks than freight. as far as trucks go i am looking for trucks with 300k miles or less on them as there still are and not all worn out i have been browsing the cascadias and the internationals with the isx as those seen to be the best bang for the buck.

I couldn’t answered this because I started back about 45 years ago, when you was green, you would drive the crappiest equipment they offered and work yourself up. Todays individuals are spoiled rotten, if your not getting in a brand new equipment, they want NO part of that company.
