I have a stock cobra 29 with a amp. If I am using my astatic mic everything is fine. If I use my spare mic which is a cobra mic the antenna light comes when I talk. But not all the time only when I turn my mic gain up or talk to loud into the mic. I don't talk loud but if I raise my voice just a little the light comes on. It makes no difference if the amp is on or off. The swr is good between 1 and 1.5. Any ideas what is causing this and why?

sounds like you still have a ground issue

A bad ground could cause this? I just thought it was odd that the light comes on if I have the mic gain turned up but if it at half way the light doesn't come on.

Noman, explain in a bit more detail about the problem if you can,
Where are the power and ground wires going to ?
Where and how is the antenna mounted ?
How is the cable routed to the radio from the antenna ?

My question would be, what is the length of the jumper between the amp and the radio? The size of the cable has no bearing on the issue, LMR400 is extreme to say the least, but, as long as it's an RG58/59 or 8 of some kind you're fine, but, I'd like to know the length of the jumper. Is it straight or do you have it coiled up? If it's straight, coil it up and tie it together to create an "RF Choke" in the line. If it's more than 3 foot, get a shorter cable if possible.

Last I knew RG-59 was 75 ohm coaxial cable.

Ok cobra 29, 100 watt amp. 3ft coax going from radio to amp. Power wires from cb are soldered to the power wires to the amp that goes to the cigarette lighter. 18 ft coax going from amp to antenna. K40 antenna visegrip mount on mirror mount. All coax is mini 8 and not coiled. Like I said if the mic gain is wide open the antenna light comes on. If it at half way the light doesn't come on. Both the cobra mic and static mic does it. I thought it was just the cobra mic but I was wrong. Thank you for all your help

The visegrip mount on mirror mount could be the problem. You could have a bad ground and/or your SWR is high. Check both first.

Where are you taking your SWR Readings, so far you havent mentioned an inline meter. Are you taking your SWR readings from the radio's meter itself ?
Just so we can be sure we are all on the same page here.
Do you have access to a dummy load or possibly a friend who has an antenna to see if the AWI light comes on; you will know that the radio is out of adjustment -and it is reading incorrectly.
    Just a thought...

I have checked the swr reading with both the radio and an inline meter. Both meters read the same just over 1. I never tried a dummy load or other antennas.
