359, time for new breathers?

Nice "garbage cans". Be tough to paint them, as long as no holes, maybe a stainless wrap? I wrapped the bottom half of mine.

 

I know its personal preference and the freedom we have to do our own thing but I’ve never personally liked the big breathers on the older Unilite and 1100 cabs. They just look too big and long and take away from the shape of the cab in my detail programed mind. They make a 359 look to much like a cookie cutter 379 at first glance. I’ve also seen some that just don’t fit right and look like they are leaning out of square. Kinda like how some bigger stacks end up being mounted. I have no recommendations on best brand to use. So choose wisely my friend.

 

They can vary. The original one on my 351 is 15-1/2. Vortox-Cyclovac. I keep it on because it is the first model of dry element filter Pete used on the big power 335’s. It was basically an oil bath base converted to house a paper element removable from the bottom. Nice thick gauge steel. It was actually made for I-H first and then supplied to Pete and as far as I can research the chrome base was Pete exclusive. The still available element numbers always come up as I-H application with no mention of Pete. So a good bit of history of originality I don’t want to change.

 

When I was looking for cans I saw some 359 cans from private sellers on Facebook Marketplace. I have 13” cans on a 389 so I bought the lids from Donaldson that fit my cans and fabricated the 6” pipe to 7” to fit my caps I got from Vortox.

 

I think I have a set of nice painted ones for 359. I will check in my Parts attic when I get home. You're more than welcome to them if I do still have them.

 

Those are nice classic style lids. Originally on Oil bath’s. It kept the can intake from getting to much direct air rammed down its throat that supposedly stirred up the oil and would cause it to sling out all over the windshield and truck. My ‘51 Diamond T still has it’s original one painted truck color.
