1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

Wanted to get some advice. I quit driving about a year ago and I was thinking about going back. I drove for a year and a half, I have a perfect DAC, no accidents, no DOT issues. I did dry van before, but I was thinking about flatbed or tanker. I live in detroit, and haven't been able to find anything local that pays well. So I was considering going otr again. Does anyone have advice for someone in my situation? Suggestions on flatbed vs. tanker vs. van. Good companies that hire out of detroit. Or any other advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

First thing to do,is get on a trucking jobs web site.Punch in your location,to see what companies hire out of your area.Being out of work that long, means you have three options.1st get hired by a "fly by night rouge company"an possibly be driving junk.
2nd, if you have alot of patients to go with a large carrier that has a training program. The legit companies will require you to have a refresher course.#rd find an owneropperator that needs a co driver.GOOD LUCK

Its unlikely that he'll be required to have a refresher course with only one yr off. Or it shouldn't be much if it is required.
Usually 3 yrs off are what triggers the refresher.

The original poster may have a hard time finding a company that will hire with less than 2 yrs experience.

From what I can tell, the main problem I will have is less than 2 years experience. Most of the smaller carriers require at least 2 years. I will have no problem with the big companies. Most of them only require 6 months in the last 3 years. Of course I'd rather not work for a huge company, but I may have to for a while. If anyone has insight on flatbed vs. tanker vs. van, that would be awesome to hear. Thanks.

Just my two cents worth, but if it were me, I think I would start out with whatever I had the most experience with. You said you drove dry van before. Why not ease back in by planning on driving dry van for six months or so, then once you get back into the grove of being on the road and driving a truck you can always switch over to flatbed or tanker.

That way, you'll be starting with something familiar. Why have to learn new skills and techniques at the same time you're just getting back into the industry and re-sharpening your skills as a driver?

If you must start back in by driving for a big company, and it sounds like you may have to do this, you can use this time to make some connections and get some input from others who are pulling flatbeds or tankers.

Just a thought... Good luck with your job search!

True about the Pumkin driving....Saw one flipped yesterday on the curve off I-95 heading toward the Commodore Barry Bridge into Jersey. Not very far into the curve either, laid right over on it's side, traffic was fuuuuunnnnn coming up from the PA/DE line yesterday at rush hour...woo hooooo...
