There’s a shop in the ####ty part of st Louis that can remachine the mating surface of the caps and then line bore/hone the main bearing bore. I had one done a couple years ago for roughly 1000 if I remember correctly. I think they even used new caps. The biggest downside in your case is you have to pull the block and completely strip it
The halfass fix if it’s not to bad is to have a shop polish the crap out of the crank to get it down a thousandth or 2Vampire Thanks this. -
No fretting on the block or caps. Got the oil pump off and gears show wear, so it’s getting replaced.
-
That’s great because the fretting is a pita to fix.
Would you post some pics of the wear on the pump gears…i believe they had a bunch from the celect years that something on the fixtures was off based on the way they wear. It’s really not important one way or the other just a curiosityVampire Thanks this. -
Fretting was a common issue on the high HP models mainly and was caused in part by the block flexing under heavy load. At one time Cummins came out with a girdle similar to what CAT uses to help strengthen the sidewalls of the block.

There was a period where the oil pump shafts were walking forward and the first symptom was loss of P/S usually.Vampire, Last Call and mile marker 27 Thank this.

I will but it’ll be this afternoon when I get back to the shop. It was mainly at the bottom of each tooth. As far as end play I didn’t have a magnetic dial to check it but just putting it in a vice and prying the gear with a screwdriver, it had to still be in tolerance .03-.05. Was really surprised at the lack of end play. I’d bet money, that this is the original oil pump. I’m gonna try and get the oil cooler/housing off too.Vampire Thanks this.

Wonder if one of those can still be found? If you ever run across a part number for that, I’d like to know.
