Kit came in and it 1 piece pistons. I’m measuring counter bores, after a thorough and extensive cleaning and hand sanding. I measured 4 places per bore, with a borrowed counterbore/protrusion dial indicator.

Liner flange thickness- .352
Liner shim thickness was labeled .020 but when I measured, they were more like .017- .018. I probably need a few other thinner or thicker shims????

I would probably put true.020 shims in it or maybe.022s I don’t believe they make a 21
Put 1 liner in and check
The .017-018 ones aren’t going to be enough you want .005 min protrusion I like 6-7 I’ve heard some try for 7+ but I know what has worked for me
what shims came out of it?mile marker 27 Thanks this. -
They were around .0194 - .0195ish. Maybe they were originally .020’s? My kit didn’t come with them but I got an unopened set of Interstate McBee’s from a mechanic, that were labeled .020” but didn’t come out to that when I measured them. I’ll get ahold of Cummins and see if they have some true .020 or .022’s.

When I get these set right, what’s typically the determining factor in using standard or oversized head gaskets?
-
They were originally 20s
Did you happen to check the protrusion before disassembling. I usually do and then measure the old liner flange and the new to determine what shims to use. This is just how I normally do it, Not that your doing it wrong -
Are you referring to the oversized water grommets or a thicker gasket.
Water grommets look at the holes in the top of the block and see if they’re eroded from rust. Thicker gaskets depend on the distance between the block deck and the crank centerline. Unless the block was planed you shouldn’t need to worry about that -
I didn’t.

I pretty sure it’s a thicker gasket.
