I see Owner & operator's make alot of money. Is this true?
I was a auto apprentice for 1 year. I can buy a 2012+ 25 FT straight truck for $3500 and fix it then do this.
Thinking of working for 6 months - 1 year for a company to have some experience before starting.
Will this work?

Unless you’re doing something spealized or starting a company from the ground up getting your own customers not just leasing on to a company. I can’t see how you would make a ton of money in a box truck just driving around delivering general freight. Unfortunately there’s way too many New Canadians from the brampton area doing that kind of work for peanuts . Hell my dad and myself tried it doing it with 2 tri- axle dump trucks working for his friends company who had the contracts . companies were only paying $78 a hr to haul asphalt we got $71 out of that . we realized after everything like fuel , taxes , putting money away for repairs, the winter months when you don’t work , then paying your self it’s not worth it and sold both trucks . this was in 2020/2021 only way to really make money in that game is get your own customers and negotiate the rates but i was new to the industry of dump trucks and my dad had no desire to start from the ground up at 60 years old . Also with hauling asphalt you want to be working in the gta area unlike us who were going all over the place burning up profits in fuel
unfortunately there’s no short cutting to get success in trucking you have to pay your dues by getting your experience then moving on to bigger, better things . how you get there that’s the tough part. My advice once you have your licence try getting on with a local cartage company driving a box truck doing local ltl type deliveries then once you have a year in or so move on . Or apply to every dz job out there and hopefully someone will reach out you
the truth is no matter how you try to slice it a DUI that’s only 5 years old is going to limit who will hire you .Alot of insurance companies will say no to a company trying to hire you and unfortunately they run the industryLast edited: Mar 30, 2024
Phantom Trucker and Magoo1968 Thank this. -
You should have stayed with auto mechanics
PeteAModelCat Thanks this. -
After 4 years DUI isn't on your abstract anymore.
I see positions uploaded everyday minimum 90-250k I don't know what you call low pay but 2-3k a Month is low for me -
Mechanics don't make anything. Especially in dealerships. They pay you a flat rate. Means no work or slow work you make.nothing
-
You do realize that if there is no work or it slows down on the truck that you will make little too?
Pete -
Automotive maybe. Heavy duty is where the money is.
-
It's also where you break your back and spine lol and pay thousands for medical support
-
Yes i know very well. But you probably don't know the automotive field well. It's like that every week. Not a busy day? Go home early. I was lucky because I got hourly pay. But actual licensed mechanics.. if they repair a light bulb or tire they make $10. Trucks is so much more worth it especially if i can fix my truck myself. Their salary is in the thousands weekly.. mechanics always in the hundreds

They make jacks, cranes, hoists, tooling etc for a reason. If you beat yourself up that's on you. 15 years in, zero aches or health issues.
