Can someone please explain this apparently new fad with super small steering wheels? Came across this, and curious as to when this became a thing?

Edit to add: I'm not hating on anyone that does this, but when did this become a thing?
Can someone please explain the small stearing wheels

It became ‘a thing’ when guys(and gals) got tired of replacing their tee-shirts because the larger steering wheels were rubbing a hole, because of their fat belly’s.Knucklehead, 86scotty, mustang190 and 15 others Thank this.

I had to laugh when I found out the new Macks come with a steering wheel with a flat bottom (when the truck is going straight) for "driver comfort." We literally are getting so fat the steering wheels are resting on our bellies and making us uncomfy. Well I jog daily while in the truck, usually on the roads surrounding our terminals or the truck stops I stop at. I actually have been able to recently strategically stop knowing what truck stops have nice places to jog and which don't. It took a while to learn and I'm still learning. I'm usually the only truck driver doing any exercise. It's sad. This doesn't HAVE to be a very unhealthy lifestyle, but it easily CAN be. Get out and walk 30 minutes a day you big lardmuffins. I've been driving for many years and I've only gained I think about 5lbs since I started driving.Last edited: Apr 5, 2024

If you look at pictures of truckers from before late 70s, most people were not fat.
Its the processed foods we eat.
Back then, drivers had less processed food and Larger steering wheels -
Yes, as you said, it CAN be an unhealthy lifestyle. When I started out I ran local, hauling farm equipment. I'm only 5'7" tall on a good day. Back then I was 145lbs soaking wet. Then I went OTR for about two years, and went from 150 at my pre hire physical, to 230 in only a year and a half. Obviously I was doing it the eating thing all wrong. And then the high blood pressure reared it's ugly head, among other things.
I quit that gig for a local job, went on a diet and started hitting the gym. Lost 50 pounds quickly and never looked back. But, I could lose a few more pounds. But if I ever need a smaller steering wheel to accommodate my fat gut, I'm gonna hang up the keys and become a DOT cop. Or a Safety manager lolJolliRoger, Sons Hero, FloridaRetired and 7 others Thank this. -
