The reason I was mentioning the “megas” is because I wanted access to a Third Party tester to complete my skills test and get my CDL reinstated. I’m actually wanting to go OTR now. For my first couple years I was OTR but with all the family at home, 5 kids and a wife, OTR could be so frustrating. So much so that I didn’t like it at all. So for the last 25 I drove LTL, City four 4 years and 16 years Linehaul and 5 years of regional cryogenics. Now I’m thinking I’d like to be a paid tourist. An old man’s version of the Foreign Legion.

I focused on safety doing road tests. A bad pre-trip says a lot about a driver. Especially experienced drivers. At a point early in your career you decide if this job is going to be a profession or just something till something better comes up. I’ll give a prospect time to become smooth with equipment but I cannot give them time if they have unsafe behaviors.

Well, my side of the story is like Norwester, I drove 10 speeds for 49 years, except on time for a couple days in that cab over. I have no idea how to drive anything but that. But you know what, give me a couple of days I WILL FIGURE IT OUT. Maybe even in a day or so. I remember i drove from Rockford , Ill too Waukegan, Illinois, WITH OUT A CLUTCH.All the way down rt 173. Must of been 70 miles , with a ton of lights, stop signs. Heck, I drove one time, maybe 10 miles, NO BREAKS, hit neutral a few times, use the curb to stop, but i only had to get back to the terminal. Speed was maybe, 5 - 10 mph. Made it.

My company had picked up a couple new tractors, must have been on close out, with super 10 transmissions. It took a minute to get smooth with that setup. I doubt if those transmissions are still around. Maybe someone here is still using one.

You know how to drive, by the end of a week or so, you`ll be right back at it. If you have 25 - 35- years past experience, dont worry one bit.

NOW, drive in the Chicago land and suburbs with that single axle in the SNOW, and ICE., That will teach anyone how to drive a Truck real fast, i call them Death traps. Freakin thing will kick out on you in a heart beat. Hang on tight. Ha ha ha

I remember years ago, Pouring Rain, I pull up on the scale house, i had a fuel line leaking , Mr DOT, yells, OK, go ahead. The inside of my cab had diesel fuel all over the floor board, and was leaking out under the cab.

You know after reading a lot of post on this subject. All of you Veteran drivers here, that have been driving for a long time, there is nothing you cant do driving a commercial vehicle. Weather continues driving forever or had a long spell of not being behind the wheel. Its in your blood, and you`ll pick it up fast, right where you left off.
