    Hi everyone,

I’ve had this underlining idea for most of my life, being an OTR truck driver. As my life and such got hectic, the thought of going from point A to point B sounded very satisfying, lol. I’ve lurked on this site on and off over the years. Good info and stories that’s for sure.

So, as I find myself coursing into my late 50s, 55 right now. I’m thinking as a real possibility to becoming an OTR driver in the next 2 to 3 years. I have to wait for my daughter to get out of college (Civil Engineer) and on her own. At that point I won’t have any more major responsibilities (no wife/pets/etc). I will be able to downsize, go from two houses to just one house (long story) and can stay out on the road for prolonged periods of time. I’ve done ok in the past 30 years. I’m not rich by any means and still need to make money, but I figure I will not need to make a lot of money. So benefits (health care, 401k, etc) and the work environment will be more important than the money.

Driver record is clear, a couple speeding tickets all 15+ years old and never any points. Drug test and such will not be an issue.

With that said, I have a few questions that I would like some insight on:

    1. I would obviously go to school and get as many endorsements as possible, but do companies hire new older drivers, fresh out of school?

    2. If yes, are they “good” companies? As in, do they treat the drivers good, have good/maintained equipment? I’d rather find a place and stay there for 5 to 10 years until I actually retire and collect SS.

    3. Best case would be on the road for months at a time with a couple weeks off at home. Does that type scenario exist?

Anyway, I look forward to reading any advice and insight that others might have.

    Thanks for reading.

That's a good plan. OTR jobs are easy to get if you have all the endorsements.
New driver job market is a little tight right now, but that will change by the time you're ready to roll.
Being in the Orlando/Daytona Beach area, your best bet is for refrigerated or flatbed companies, since you want to stay on the road for long periods of time.

I've only been local, so I can't help you with question 3, although I suspect if you're going to be taking extended home time they'll want you to return your truck to a terminal and clear your stuff out, so the truck can be rolling even though you're not. As far as questions 1 and 2, my experience says yes to both. I got my CDL at age 57 more or less as a lark, but got hired by one of the major LTL carriers, and it turns out I really enjoy driving, so I'll keep on doing it as long as if fits in with the rest of my life.

    Chinatown/Jamie, thanks for the insight.
I didn't think of the cleaning out of the truck, exactly why I'm posting on here. I guess I'll learn what to bring and what not to bring, if I find that type of gig.
Good to know there are new older drivers being hired, not that 57 is old, lol.

To answer all of your questions, YES to all 3. As far as your first year out of school don't expect to be treated the greatest that first year..most drivers don't stay at their first job more than 6 months to 2 years with a few exceptions. Get your year or so of experience at your first company and move on to higher paying companies. There are a few exceptions. I stayed at my first for about 5 years, I should have left after 2 or less because I was leaving money on the table with a higher paying company that required more experience As far as your age you are fine, I started trucking at 50 years old .There are quite a few OTR few companies out there that will love you if you plan on staying out months at a time. You can do that and take a week or so off. Sounds like you got a good plan in place, good luck!

Thanks for the insight. Maybe I'll get lucky with my first company. My goal for the next couple of years is to gain as much knowledge that I can and try to avoid mistakes that other have made. Once I get closer to my time, I'll start to research schools for the best placement and recruitment.

Yes most companies like old guys.Once you're licensed and get some experience you could even sign up with a temp service and sort of work part-time, or stay out as long as you like.

I know you have a couple of years to go, but I'll give the names of some reefer companies that may be hiring when you're ready to roll. All these usually hire new cdl school grads, but have tightened up on hiring during this recession. Probably be back to hiring new cdl school grads by the time you're ready.
