I am thinking of buying a truck with a 8.3 cummins in it. Is this a good engine? It is 230 hp and this will be for persoanl use so can I add some more power to it? It is a 97 model

We have run these engines in a lot of equipment. Trucks tractors combines and the like. They are a really good solid engine. We haven't had any serious issues with the 8.3. They seem to like the energizer bunny they keep going and going. Right now we have 4 of them. They range in size from 130 to 300hp.
What make and model are you looking at and what are you going to be doing with it? -
It is in a freightliner fl70 single rear axle. I will be putting my 4 wheelers and 4x on the bed and towing my camper behind.

I don't think you would have any problems with that unit. One of our grain trucks has that engine in it rated at 250 HP with an allison auto. Hauls 13.5 T legal no problem out in wet fields. Its kind of a pig on the road with a load, it seems that the auto takes more power than a sitck. But its been good.
