Had a hub seal leak a little, maybe from sitting for a month, not sure. Bearings and seal were last done 286,279 miles ago. Decided to swap out the seal for new. Bearings/race look great. The seal surface looked good where the seal was (SKF 47697 about 1/4") but, behind that was rusty and pitted.

New seal was a Timken 11s47670 which had a wider contact area to the housing about 5/8. I scaled all the rust and knocked out any little pits from behind the seal surface to the brake spider. polished up with a surface conditioning disk and assembled with new seal.

The truck sat in the same spot for a week and, every time I went to the yard to do more work I peak under to see if the new seal was leaking ( I kind of topped the hub with oil via the hub drain plug before I put the wheels on. Maybe a little overfilled but, I figured it would just drain into the housing). It was not, nice and dry.

A weak after that, I peaked under and the seal had leaked a lot more oil then the bad seal. Enough to drip down the tire and the truck had never moved.

So, my real question is, has anyone ever used a Speedy Sleeve on this surface? I figured if I ended up having to replace that seal again I would sleeve the surface but, not sure if this is an application for one seeing as the install tool would have to be fairly long.

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

    That Timken seal one piece?

I think Stemco have a special sleeve you drive onto the spindle. Worth looking into, I've always prefered Stemco myself when it comes to wheel seals.

Thanks, looks like the Stemco Guardian is the way to go for me.

    I agree.

The CR seal has a narrow seal band on the axle and will rust and pit the seal surface.

Apply quality RTV on the guardian wear sleeve to the axle. The seal installs on the axle first and is the best solution for a rusty wheel end. The Stemco tool is a must for installation.

I happen to have some Permatex #2 sealant that Stemco recommends. Thank you for your input. 21 years with this truck and never knew about these spindle seals.
Behind the CR seal looked almost like popcorn ceiling to the spider. It's all scaled and chipped away and coated with LPS3 now.
