All i’m going to say is it starts with W and ends with freight . i did end up getting a text saying it was a 5 year contract but nothing about how many more years are left or is it Mon- friday. The recruiter kind of pissed me off , he was supposed to call me between 6-6:30pm and at 6:35pm i finally had enough waiting and called him . While talking to him his young daughter is screaming and carrying on in the background and he kept talking about his dog is doing this or that . I understand he has a young family but it wasn’t a very professional phone call and then him saying yes it’s mon- friday and ot if you want it . Then says oh i think the guys have to start at either 11pm sunday or midnight monday isn’t exactly mon- friday is it when you start at 4pm and finish around 2 or 3 am on saturday morning . I’m seriously thinking of passing but having a salary of 75k is unheard of in trucking and if the manufacturer is done at 8 or 9 hrs you can go home on the other hand you could work some 14 hr days . it all equals out in the end.
What’s worrying me the most is him saying i can’t guarantee there would be another local position and he said they don’t even have daycabs at the head office . only local trucks in ingersoll and stratford . they started out as a 3pl company 6 years ago and bought their own equipment 5 years ago but are growing. Seems like all their local drivers work for only one contract and the us drivers pu and deliver their own loads .Again they are in the process of buying up a smaller trucking company with daycabs so as he said there might be a opening if i’m a good driver or they could get rid of a bad driver to give me a spot
What would you do ?

working for the trucking company who has a contract with a pet food manufacturer shunting 3-4 trailers from plant to their storage lot . apparently they don’t have much space . 5 year contract but only 3-4 years left and there banking on the good relationship with the owners that the contract will be renewed . Until they get underbid and lose itLast edited: May 12, 2024

I’m 38 now and my house will be paid off at 47 . No kids or wife but i’m at a point now where i need to figure out my future and this company isn’t it unfortunately. Which really sucks because i’m treated real well , me and my family were sick a lot at the beginning of the year and they never cared . i just had to get a doctors note and if you needed a day off don’t have any problems either. The problem is the no work calls all year around and the 55-62k a year income. There’s no way i can either retire or pay all my home bills with that income. Especially as you get older and if you get sick and can’t work your screwed if you have nothing put away like i don’t now
i’m very serious thinking of trying to get on with Tim Hortons private fleet $31.25 to start and $36.50 after 3 years ot after 80 hrs in two weeks. 3 weeks vacation to start benefits and retirement plan . 4 day work weeks with a set schedule every week but no weekends off a course
i would just have to eat a lot of sh$t sandwiches for a few years until i gain seniority and deal with the safety nazi’s and mirco management which i deal with now anyways
It’s all lift gate with power jack bring the pallet to the door and employees off load it . after watching a few drivers while in the drive thru . they walk around like they have all day not killing them selves like most food service jobs or wearing out your body
still not sure let what to do , with what happened with schneider and having to scramble to find work once i was told nothing but cross border or move to montreal. I don’t really want to go through that againLast edited: May 12, 2024

I know you said you don’t want to go to MB but we just got a 10% pay raise and 6% in each of the next two years.

Well since i turned the job down after a lot going back and forth on what i should do . i guess i can mention their name now it’s Wellington motor freight . talking to Mike the head recruiter on the phone and through text . my gut was saying don’t take it yes it’s the most money i’ve ever made . the job ad didn’t line up with what i was told . ie shuttling trailers in Elmira and surrounding area , no it’s working for one customer . I looked up the pet food company and it’s owned by a large corporation not family owned like Mike said , and has been bought and sold atleast 3 times over the years . Maybe misspoke and meant something else i don’t know . The mon-friday is wrong too You finish sat morning then have to work sunday night at either 11pm or 12 midnight. I’m thinking to myself how does that work when you have to work monday afternoon shift at 4pm too . Then the we can’t say for sure there would be other local work but if your a good driver we could get rid of another driver comment kind of bugged me too . Mike the recruiter was bragging about how everyone in the office was in their 30’s and not old guys with gray hair . i’m in my 30’s and in my opinion i’d rather work for an older experience guy vs a guy in his 30’s with no trucking industry experience
The salary of 75k is absolutely unheard of in trucking and i really wish it would have worked out . Again with having to scramble to find a job when schneider pulled the plug on loblaws and knowing you really need to research every trucking company around the GTA i don’t want that stress if they don’t get the contract again. In trucking nothing last for ever , Kriska tried playing the long term relationship crap with unilever when charger underbid us and it didn’t workLast edited: May 13, 2024
