Floating the gears; not using clutch

In my own truck, I only float gears. Years ago though my dad had an old IH single axle dump truck, and you (almost) needed to use the clutch on every gear. It just shifted much better that way.

 

First transmission I pulled the top cover off of there were just little tiny nubs left on the sliding clutches. Truck literally had less than 100k kilometers on it.

 

Can't find them, Grind them.

That's extreme.


Normal top two gears, then they complain it's popping out of gear.

 

Shifting techniques depend primarily on road conditions and the truck. Learn to apply the correct application for the conditions. I don't have a cdl but i did watched utube.

 

I have never successfully managed to double clutch a truck yet. I’ve been driving for around 8 years now. Passed my driving test without doing it. Instructor said he didn’t care as long as I didn’t grind them too bad. I’m driving an automatic now. Griped a bit about it, but honestly I love it now. Wouldn’t want to go back.

 

Do that with twin sticks

 

saw one of them in a 58' kenworth , 318 with twin sticks . Bet that was a workout in city traffic .

 

OK, between large trucks, street cars and racing cars over about 2 million miles, I have never once replaced a clutch or a transmission. And I floated gears on every one that had a manual. The only car I rarely floated on was my race-prepped 1986 Omni GLHS Turbo. But then, when you are racing, your speed in changing gears is important, and I almost always used the clutch on that car.

I once drove an R-series Mack with a Maxidyne tranny. I could float gears on it, but just barely. Straight-cut gears with no bevel on the ends made it difficult to float smoothly, so I didn't float gears on that truck again.

 

Hydrovac unit. They rarely get more than 500 km a week. Drive across town to a job, work all day and then drive back to the yard. This truck was barely 5 years old at the time.
