I've been driving thirty years I gave up on the split sleeper berth when they did away with 5 & 5 and paper logs.

Didnt read every reaponse. The 2 hrs doesnt have to be off duty. It can be off duty or sleeper or any combination. The 8 or 7 hr portion of the split has to be sleeper birth though. Any 10hr break fully resets your clock. Can be any combination of sleeper birth and off duty time. Only caviat is if you are doing splits and have done the short break then 8hrs has to be in the sleeper then you can change to off duty if need be

This is the best explanation of split sleepers I've ever come across. When I was teaching, we used this in our logbook/HOS classes.

When I last used split-sleeper my ELD would show a violation until the instant the sleeper time made the previous "driving past 14 clock" warning go away.

Most new drivers are guaranteed to create a violation the first time they try to use split-sleeper unless they can have some trainer or employee walk them through how to use it right now, in this particular situation. Split-sleeper often creates what the DOT calls an egregious HOS violation if you don't do it properly.

Simplest way for me to understand it, the first break freezes the 14. After the second break, you get back what you used before the first break. If the second break is equal to or greater than 10 hours, the 11 and 14 are reset as normal.
If you split again, without a ten, the third break freezes the 14. After the 4th break, you get back what you used before the third break. And so on.
