So I had this customer bring his truck in for an oil leak possibly front crank seal. I cleaned the front of the engine and ran the truck and could not determine where his oil was coming from. I could see a leak around the corners of the pan gasket. I told him what I found and he said it was due a service so go ahead and put a pan gasket on. Pulled the pan plug and this is what came out. The oil filters were full of it as well. I dropped the pan and the entire bottom of the block was coated in this mess. Turns out he was 36,000 miles into this oil, but that does not explain this mess. I am thinking maybe a broke ring on a piston or injector o-ring. His fuel in his fuel bowl was black as well. https://youtube.com/shorts/e8Ejrlnwnvw

I asked and he said no. He is the owner and he drives it himself. But customers usually don't tell the whole truth.

I have seen a few different things cause that.
First was a E350 van with a 351 that had a reman engine put in at the dealer. This was for a major company that I worked for.
I pulled the records and it had over 30,000 miles on that oil. It was likely break in oil as well.
Second was in some transmissions. A lot of old timer produce and cattle hauler folks ran mineral oil in them. When you start mixing mineral and petroleum it makes stuff like that.
Third was a cracked liner getting coolant in oil. It was not that color but not off to bad. Lots of different coolants out there anymore. It could happen.
A local company here was using oil blended by the local oil jobber. They never had any problems but said when they took the covers off the top end was full of black slime.
Anyone or a combination of those things?

Is he losing coolant? Black in the fuel filter is either algae or compression getting into the fuel.

I'd bet it looks milky on the top end

If seen that when rain water or regular water from washing gets into oil as well. The oil leak may be letting water in. Heavy water like that will mix nasty.
