Expect that in the summer, it will be hot and dirty. Expect that in the fall, you will be picking up a lot of deer carcasses. In the winter you will be plowing, and in the spring, you will be cleaning out clogged ditches and culverts.

If youre doing asphalt youll get laid off in the winter

Patching holes on hard surface roads was always fun on 100 degree days too.
Ditch mowing was ok if ya got a machine with ac but miserable if not .
Rocking roads was ok if you could tolerate the boredom of the back and forth routine.
Working with the Gradall operator cleaning and grading ditches , installing driveway tube's was it's own brand of misery due to heat and dust but also due the personality of the Gradall operator....most of the county's trucks back then had no AC .
Lots of politics and backdoor deals went on back then some of which I used to my benefit, farmers love free dirt and I got to choose who got the dirt we took out of those ditches so let's just say I never had any shortage of land to hunt .
Bottom line tho is I hated the politics , the whole union protects the lazy thing while everyone else busts ### , management that robbed the county blind .
I liked plowing snow and working in the shop but nothing else do I miss . -
and the test is pretty easy to get started
With the basic license
