My history is trucking to office/technical work, and slowly back to trucking. After I left the tech world, I spent three years doing county work. I absolutely loved it! I was already a cdl holder, so I stepped into dump truck and rgn work. I learned tilt top, grader and paver operations. I still have love for finish roller work. They would let me operate anything I wanted, under supervision of a more experienced operator. I really can’t express how much I learned there. You’ll be a part of a very close knit team, as the work can be dangerous, and you count on your co-workers, as they count on you.

    The down side…

Pay is low. Yes, it comes with government pension and benefits, but when I was in it, 40k was about top end. If you can live on that and hold out for retirement, it’s a pretty good way to go! I still have great memories and good friends from those days!

Thank you! Yeah one of the guys I went through schooling with originally had his CDL paid for through them I believe. This location isn't far and I believe the qualifications aren't terrible. Id definitely do it.

Do you guys happen to know of any private sector of jobs for trucking? I'm unsure if I phrased that right but I keep running into "private sectors sometimes pay more than state" etc

I really appreciate your comment and it sheds light and insight on what I hope would be the same if I were to be hired on at this location at the moment my status on the site hasn't changed but the job has closed so I'm hoping for good news fingers are crossed. I just want to get my feet in the door sooner than later as I have to put a year into a company as per to fulfill my obligation to the state to waive my school fees lol

Experience tells me the hiring process can be very slow. Stuck with it!

Yes, jobs like these tend to get filled by the new County Executive's "no-good brother-in-law" who has a record and a drinking problem.....

While they will change check into the retirement system.
I retired with 36 years in a State of Ohio Pension eight years ago. Ohio provided group insurance which for my wife and myself was approximately $900.00 a month. Two years after retirement the retirement board decided to drop health care insurance.
I had to go on the open market for health insurance.
When I hired in the City I worked did not take out for Medicare. I had to go back to work to become Medicare eligible.
My social security falls under the WEP issue that reduces my social security. I do not earn enough in social security to cover Medicare. Make sure your county time will not reduce your social security.
Many government pensions are cutting retirement benefits. We had people leave to make more in retirement working for non-government business.

I reached back out to suburban propane and even though I got my CDL on my own vs them getting it for me the wage starting is 20hr which I definitely feel is low, considering its an hour away also yuck.
