Hi all! I am a truck driver's wife - he's been driving local and OTR for 20 years and it seems to be what he is the happiest doing. We are kicking around the idea of selling our house, selling off lots of the "stuff" we have, putting the little we would keep in storage and going OTR full-time. One interesting twist is that I have my own business as a manufacturer's sales representative. For 80% of the time ("regular" business days - not trucker's days) I am in my home office - working via e-mail, e-fax, and phone. I spend about 50 days a year out of town. All but two of my customers are at least 150 miles from home, so a day out is usually the whole day and often preceded by a night at a hotel local to my customers. All that said to say we think I can run my business from the road. I run a mostly paperless office (I hate filing cabinets!) and rarely need anything outside of my computer to do my work. Still playing through the financial scenerios of getting me from ABC Truckstop to Seattle or Portland for the appointments those 50 days out of the year. The logistics I can handle - the $$ is the limiting factor.
It's still in the incubating stage -although once I get an idea into my head I latch on to it and research and study it until life whacks me up side the head and I have to attend to business and life. Though I have only known my husband a little over three years and never exposed to trucking outside of the large regional retailer warehouse I worked at for a while , I am a darn good passenger! I loved the two weeks on the road with him couple of years ago - that's how I knew I could marry him, if I could be around him 24-7 in a 70" sleeper I could certainly do "regular" life.
Anyway, enough from me - I gotta get back to learning about authorities, permits, torque and HP, and all the stuff that goes into making such a big decision!
I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts on our idea - I promise I am open to hearing experiences and opinions!
Teresa
