I agree. The thing is even if the driver is still signed in the distances driven and the speeds both should be small. In the world of trucking, things happen. Clocks get busted from time to time. Almost all carriers today use a 3rd party that aggregates all information like fuel receipts. I bet they also can see where a truck is in the shop esp if the driver has made the correct comment. I doubt most safety depts get too concerned when a truck gets driven when in the shop. If asked about it they can show receipts for the shop.

Nobody will get bent out of shape that’s for sure. But the problem is. They trigger driving time. Then after 5 minutes it automatically goes to on duty. Then it stays on on duty for two days until you pick the truck up. It can all be edited and notated. It’s not a big deal, but it will jack your logs up if you don’t.

Driving company truck even at company shop they told us to log out of ELD. They had drivers go home and shop moved truck and messed up driver 34 hours reset. I think they said they can’t change driving time once the truck is moved. If you log out it then you can refuse the drive time and they then assign it to shop guy.

Even back in the paper log days, you should always make comments that describe anything out of the ordinary that might affect the matching of the logs to the actual run data provided through the QC. As I said most carriers use a 3rd party company to aggregate all this information. I can't remember the correct number but my last few years active my time logging a fuel stop had to be within (I think) 30 minutes of EFS time stamps. Here's the thing. It is the same principle that a cop generally won't tell you how many MPH over they will let you go before making a case against you. Safety depts won't admit the FMCSA when they do audits allowing a % of problems assuming things as drivers get into trouble with their 14-hour clock going out at bad times. They just want to see where the carrier took note of it plus corrective action taken. I have written about this ad nauseam many times already and won't get too deep here. The FMCSA allows some give and take to avoid serious problems with getting flooded with drivers following 390.36 complaining about forced dispatches that cause clock busts.

So when you lose control of your rig in a situation like leaving it in a shop by all means log out of your logs. Make a record of the time and date you leave it and pick it up. Any issues be ready to tell a safety critter where to "stick it".

I was thinking about that recently too , and when i checked the trucks eld , bingo there were like five moves without a logged in driver . What it was that our drivers drop off the truck at the tire shop at night , the repair guy moves it to the bay and then when done moves it out to the ready line ( never off property but still shows truck moving) , so if it has multiple issues getting fixed by more than one mech it could move multiple times with out a logged in driver . The fix for company truck is to reject those times then then start pre trip on the eld. Like was said above , when Dot does audit , the company shows it was at shop , last driver completely logs off , any time afterwards is mech time , new driver logs in and good to go
