You are aloud 400 pounds over on drives, hit the road. I'm guessing you got your fifth wheel slammed all the way forward.

I don't know what it is about drivers running so heavy on their steer tires these days. Other than over gross weight, that's what dot is going to look at, unless the tractor is rated for 12300 or 13500 steers in states that it's allowed. I give upAnother Canadian driver and Concorde Thank this.

Most otr trucks these days are rated for 12,500.
Running with my 5th wheel all the way forward puts me at 12,550 with full tanks, a student and still let's me have 34k on the drives. If I ran the 5th wheel back a hole or two I would either have to play "drive 500 miles, put in 50 gallons" or slide the 5th wheel a lot more. It's easier to just run it forward.
There are two other advantages - slightly better handling/ride and significantly better fuel economy. I sometimes pull a pup trailer that I need to slide the 5th wheel back in order to avoid the landing gear hitting the mudflap bracket. One week I neglected to slide it forward after dropping the pup and lost .2 mpg on the next trip from what I usually get.Another Canadian driver Thanks this. -
My crapcadia is rated for 12300. But I've noticed running heavy on steers wears them out faster and causing scalloping. It also depends on how they load the trailer.Another Canadian driver Thanks this.

Three to four hundred pounds over on the drives with eight tires is better than being over or at max on the steers especially in the hot summer months. Just my opinion.Another Canadian driver and gentleroger Thank this.
