Looks like times are tough for Indian River. They reduced detention pay to $15/hr and it no longer starts at 2 hours. Now it's 3 hours. Additionally, any new hires from here on out will only get a sign on bonus if they're a team. Solo drivers will no longer be getting a sign on bonus.

    Redtwin and Rugerfan Thank this.

I know to adjust the hanger, the issue is we haul different manufacturers tanks and the kingpins can be different distances from the nose of the tank. Adjust for one tank and then hook to another and now your lines are dragging on the catwalk.

I'm not into messing with the hanger constantly.

My next new truck, I might invest in a frame mount chain hanger to free up under bunk space ...or maybe just not carry as much stuff.

Detention has always been hit or miss for me so I won't notice any difference to the paycheck

That's good for the company that you don't keep track of what's owed to you detention wise, I've always made sure I've gotten detention paid out even if it's an hour ... You know considering it's a million dollar company and it shouldn't be an issue

Yep . Between that and the mass firings and closing of shops etc... it does look like it'll get interesting for whomever sticks around.. I see large influx going to Bynum and Oakley

I’ve experienced the varying kingpin distance issue, too. The catwalk box I spoke of in previous posts would clear most of our tanks, but it did snag on some if I turned too sharp. I’m still planning to get another one or building my own. I’m wanting to get one that I can put a small inverter generator in. I’m getting back into the groove of using my Foreman Grill, and the batteries/inverter have a hard time keeping up when I grill for long periods (cooking 2-3 days worth of meat back-to-back) followed by 4-5 minutes of microwaving a potato. I’m going to get a small generator that I can use for cooking. I don’t want it getting snowed on or sandblasted with road grime 24/7, though. Feel free to throw suggestions my way if anyone cooks and has similar issues.

I’m definitely with you on the chain rack. I’ve been wanting one for a while myself. I’ve seen a few on our trucks over the years.

When I started 4 years ago detention was pretty much non existent. There wasn't even a defined pay scale for it. I asked and was told "it varies". I later came to understand that means don't expect any.

I do take note of my detention, I submit the required notation on the Qualcomm and note it in writing on my transflow and have still been told that it depends on whether we get it from the customer.

On principle, you are correct, it should be paid regardless as it is now a stated policy. In the big picture, it is such a small fraction of my overall pay that I choose not to make big deal about it to the higher ups.

Are they doing any better?. We share a drop lot with Oakley in upstate NY and for the past few months there have been easily 3 or 4 times as many Oakley tanks sitting up there.

That may be an indicator of nothing, but to my mind, that many idle tanks can't be a good sign.
