Personal Knives, anyone have the facts?

Fixed blade knifes are worthless to a driver,a folder of good quality is a must have. Combo edge blades are good for many instances but tend to be high maintenance when it comes to keeping the serrations up to snuff.

I prefer automatics or double action folders myself,blade deployment
with either is near effortless while wearing gloves.
Never had a hassle with LEO's about carrying such knives,I dont flash blades around cops to begin with. Getting caught "with" will likely not have anything to do with trucking,doing my job etc so I never worry about it.

Blades made of D2 or S30V perform real well on EDC's(every day carry)
The 154C steel is very hard (60 HRC) as well as hard to sharpen,but does have decent edge retention.
Several good knife forums available to do research on what will suit your everyday needs.Advice and vendor references will help avoid issues with on-line vendors as well as dispel myths on what true quality actually is.

Blade length close to 4" is very versatile and often does the same work of larger proportion blade with less bulk.
Buying auto's and double action knives is really much easier then the vendors disclaimers lead one to believe.

Personally I'm a huge fan of Benchmade's with the AXIS lock.
Very clever design that closely equals the performance of an automatic without any sort of spring assist.I have a H&K 14210 that I really like,the 154C blade keeps it low on my EDC rotation list.

If your on more of a budget and prefer the tanto style blade,look into the Cold Steel* Tanto Voyager.Its a decent knife for the money,but still has the short falls of the tanto style blade.

I could go on for days about knives . . . . . .
Never get dressed without one or maybe two

 

Blade length issues aside, and any other state to state legalities, anything that can be used as a weopon will probably depend on the proximity of the object to the driver, and officer discretion. Almost anything can be a deadly weopon under specific situations.

 

I guess my 11" blade is a bit of overkill, but I suppose that's the point. 16.25" overall.

I carried a 4" Buck knife with the rosewood handle for almost 20 years on my belt and never had a problem with it! I could open it with a flick of the wrist and I kept the thing razor-sharp. I lost it about 10 years ago and when I went to buy another one all I could find were those toys with the plastic handles and such! I felt naked for a while with out it on my side! It was heavy enough to use as a small hammer had good steel that sharpened easily and held the edge wonderfully except when cutting stretch wrap to often! But when sitting for some stupid reason or other the stone would come out and there was 10 minutes taken care of! I consider a good knife a tool but it doesn't matter where it's at in the pocket or on the belt. I even have a Victornox on my key chain and that is a nice thing to have! There is also a first generation Leatherman in the tool pouch! That multi tool has been a life saver over the years! I havent found a knife I wanted on my belt and I can't see having a Tanto or some thing that big on my belt!

 

is what ive always carried. Its big but not too big, its foldable its strong and durable. legal everywhere ive ever been and if you wear it exposed its still a "dont f^&$ with me looking belt buckle".

 

Now that could be very risky before that first cup of coffee...just make sure the blades are in the closed position...especially if you keep them surgically sharp!
