have a question on this style ac compressor... im wondering if i can grease or replace the bearing in it? it works fine but just a preventative maintenance thing, , its bout 7 yr old, thanks
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
More than likely replaceable but most parts people are going to try and sell you the whole unit.
tj379, Rideandrepair and Oxbow Thank this. -
I don't think the bearing is serviceable. The clutch can be replaced, but not worth the time anymore with A/C compressors so cheap
IMOtj379, Rideandrepair, beastr123 and 1 other person Thank this. -
thats what worries me! reolacing my old one that still works for some cheap china pos!

It is a Sanden compressor, pretty sure it is an SD708, you can measure between the front and rear ears to know the size, and there should be a sticker on it somewhere.
The good news is they make the bearings for it; the bearings are not serviceable.
It isn't hard to replace, there is a manual for the SD compressor.
You need a couple of tools that you may have to rent/buy.tj379 Thanks this. -
Cheaper to buy a new one. It’s not even worth it to just change the clutch. Bearings? Forget it. New compressor, new dryer. Can’t beat the price. 7 yrs is great. They have Chinese knockoffs. They’re popular with aftermarket classic car kits. Supposedly very reliable. Cost is about 20-25% less. I wouldn’t buy one for a Truck. Exact replacement is cheap enough. I honestly think any attempt to replace bearing or even clutch has a high chance of failing. Waste of money and especially time. I’ve replaced at least 6 clutches on York style TCI compressors very simple job, they’re junk compared to Sanden. The time and effort to replace a clutch on a Sanden is complicated by comparison. The instructions seemed too complicated to me. Involves setting a gap if I recall. Just not worth it.

i hear ya... hate to replace a good compressor but that bearing i know will leave me stranded at some pointRideandrepair Thanks this.

What bearing? Clutch? Pretty sure compressor has 2 bearings. A cam and 7 valves. It’s a great design. I doubt anyone has ever rebuilt one. Get a new one. The new ones have a clutch that doesn’t lock up if the compressor fails and locks up. They came out with them about 10 years ago. I’ve heard that all Sandens are that way now. Not sure myself. Be sure to get that style. Yours is on borrowed time. My last compressor lasted almost 6 years. Can’t complain. I had one last longer once. 1 million miles. That’s rare.tj379 Thanks this.
