Well this is how it went for me, for what its worth.

I called recruiting, they gave me a run down of the requirements and asked if I met all of them. I said yes and was asked if I would like an information packet faxed, e-mailed, or mailed to my house. I had it mailed to my house. It sat on my kitchen table for about 2 weeks while I thought it all over. I ended up filling out the app and mailing it back in. When they received it I got a phone call just letting me know it was received and being processed. I apologized for the delay and said I was surprised to hear from them because I haven't heard from them since the initial phone call I made to them. My recruiter said "well we don't want to SELL the company to someone who doesn't really want to be here, we only want serious hard working drivers. We lay out the facts and let YOU decide if you want to lease on with us"

About a week later I got a phone call back saying "you have been approved, we have orientation on such and such dates, let us know what works best for you to come in". About a week later I called my recruiter back and told them what day I would be in town for orientation.

Orientation really blew me away with how they treat their contractors, and what they have to offer and how they conduct business. I don't see myself going anywhere for a long long time.

I faxed mine in on Thursday and now it's the weekend. (too soon?) I just got a package from Landstar, maybe I'll send that in as well.

Anyone at Mercer could tell me what it cost them to get all the supply from Mercer (headache rack, tarps, straps, binders, etc...)? At least enough to meet their minimal requirements and also is it comparably cheaper there or somewhere else?

If I can find it I will send you the requirement with the price lists. I don't like their tarps. Or metal edge protectors. Their pad tarp I am not crazy about either. (felt material) Also the timbers I got from them was cheap and not 4x4's.

That price lists would be great. Where and whose (equipments) do you recommend? I'll be starting from scratch so might as well get the right (prefer) things from the get go instead of "crying" about them at a later time.

I went through my briefcase. I found a bunch of stuff, but not them. I know I have them somewhere. I will keep looking. The timbers; any store like lowes , home depot etc. The treated ones at lowes are about 8 bucks, but heavy. Most places require at least 8 to load. Good to have extras. I put the junk ones from mercer (light, flimsy, doglegged, maybe 3x3.5's) up under the trailer with my V boards I made. The good timbers I had in front of the landing legs. Might be OK to get some of mercers for extras as they are not expensive, but some of mine split and broke in half the first time I used them.

You can get decent tarps in several places. Mercer has these nappy turn one way for steel tarps, turn the other way for lumber tarps. The problem is they don't have drops. Plus they are not 8 foot drops if you need them that way. You lose tarp length trying to make them 8 foot drops. Heck; I have had to use a half a dozen tarps trying to cover tall loads.

If you have time some stuff can be ordered online fairly reasonable. If not I would ask around the area your in to see who would be decent.

You should look on craigslist and other used supply places and get you stuff there. To many people going out of business with stuff to sell to buy all new. I bet there is still arrow stuff floating around for sale.
