I am still in Iraq but I am trying to catch up on DOT Hours of service stuff as around here it is easy to loose your job and I am just trying to stay prepared. I was O/O back in 2002-2004. I have read the DOT site stuff and my understanding of is .... assume I am already loaded:
00:00 - 00:15 pre trip
00:15 - 05:45 on duty drive 5.5 hrs
05:45 - 06:15 lunch
06:15 - 11:45 on duty drive 5.5 hrs
11:45 - 12:00 post trip
12:00 - 22:00 10hrs sleeper off duty
I am showing 1 hour on duty not driving and 11 hrs driving totals 12 hours but the rule says I have to wait? for 14 hours is that right in other words I have 10 hours sleep and I can't drive? Am I missing something here?
Thanks Ken

You require 10 hours of off-duty or sleeper berth (or any combination thereof providing it is continuous ... let's not get into split-berth just yet). The 14 hours you might be thinking of is the time within which you can drive up to 11 hours.
Using your example then, you could go back on duty again at 22:00 and drive the remaining two hours of that calendar day, minus the time for your pre-trip inspection. All of which makes up part of your next 14-hour work schedule. Also, you can work past the 14 hour mark, you just may not drive after that point without having a 10-hour rest.

Thanks... I am looking at my old routes trying to figure out how I am going to do them under these new rules, I was use to using the old split sleeper birth usually 4 & 4 or 2 & 6 but I can see that won't work. I have a hard time sleeping much past 4 hours. I just don't seem to need it but maybe every 4th or 5th day I need full 8. I am not even sure I will be able to find my old routes, things change but I use to run south Fl to Vancouver and Salinas, Ca to Jacksonville, FL. I appreciate you clearing that up for me. I might be back sooner than I think, even if I can run my old stuff I will make a bet they don't pay what they use too.
Thank you

The new split-sleeper rules are 8 & 2 ... that might work for you.
The only real issue with them is that once you're into that cycle, you need to take a 10 to get out. Not necessarily a big issue if you're just tacking on 2 to make your 10 and can work the previous 2 as "lunch", or if you're able to take a 34-hour reset and start all over again. -
You can drive 11 hrs but you have to do it within 14 hrs from when you started driving after your 10 hr break. That doesn't leave you much time on the dock if you need to drive your 11 hrs. You don't have to wait until 14 hrs is over to start your 10 break. But you can't drive after 14 hrs from when you started. Just like you can't drive after being on duty for 70. You can be on duty past 14, just can't drive.
Sleeper can be split 8 and 2 or more. The 8 hr half has to all be in the sleeper but doesn't count towards your 14 hrs. The 2 or more hrs can be either sleeper or off duty and does count towards your 14 hrs.
If you are off duty for 34 hrs or more you can reset your hrs back to 70 available. That one comes in handy if you are laid over for the weekend. That's it really. Just keep an eye on your 14 and you'll be ok.
Usually takes me about 12 hours to do an 11 hr run. You always have things to stop for like fuel and coffee, kick the tires and scratch your butt. If I start at 6am I know I'll be finished for the day around 8pm. 10 hr break and I can go at 6am again.Last edited: Apr 19, 2010
