Depending on what I was doing I’d leave out about 3am and get home about 5pm. 450-600 miles is easily done in a day on the Big Island. Driving on Oahu would be tough because of the population.Sirscrapntruckalot, Oxbow and austinmike Thank this.

Thank you for sharing your experience!! Did the company you worked for pAy for your TWIC card or did you have to yourself? I’m not interested in delivery. I want a no-touch freight position or very minimal touch. I’ll look up DHX. I’m a young black female so I guess I’ll find out. Thanks again!

I was there several times on a ship. You're correct. We were strongly advised not to hitchhike, especially at night because there's a good chance of getting mugged or just beaten for the heck of it.
The judges are mostly Hawaiian or Samoan and they take care of their own.TripleSix and Gearjammin' Penguin Thank this. -
Oh wow, that’s bad! Hopefully that was just in your time and it’s no longer the case nowadays.Chinatown Thanks this.

I got TWIC on my own. I enjoyed my time there, I came back to the mainland because the other end of the deal I agreed to wasn’t upheld on their part. The container stuff I did, even the hot oil tanks, was no touch. Grab a container out of the port and it was a drop and hook on the other end, then take the empty back to the port. If you go to like a Walmart or Home Depot or another box store you may have to drop your loaded, pull an empty from a door, spot a different loaded in the door, put the loaded you brought in someplace out of the way, then leave with your empty. But it’s all hourly pay so it doesn’t matter.Sirscrapntruckalot and Lexi13 Thank this.

I don't think anyone outside of Hawaii will accept single state driving as OTR driving. I worked on a dedicated account that sent me to maybe 7 states and it didn't count as OTR.LoneRanger Thanks this.

I don’t want to sound negative, but given how Hawaii became part of the United States and the fact that outsiders have driven up real estate prices to the point natives can no longer afford to buy anything, they really don’t like anyone that isn’t Hawaiian. If you have thick skin you just deal with it. There were places I stayed away from on the Big Island if I was alone. I basically stuck to the touristy places. My friend took me sightseeing to some places I was told not to visit alone.Rugerfan, TripleSix, Sirscrapntruckalot and 4 others Thank this.

TWIC is maybe $85. If you are getting a HazMat and if there is ANY possibility you want a TWIC, get them both at the same time. I think it's under $120 for both. It's better and faster than paying $85 for each and waiting TWICE to get approval.

Ah! Sorry things didn’t work out. I mainly just want to get the experience (somewhere warm) for about 6 months then leave.
Thanks for the info! I would definitely be interested in doing something similar to what you described. Feel free to share other company names! I looked up driver positions at DHX. Seems to be mostly loading/offloading deliveries with forklift, hand truck etc… not for me.
