Not to hijack the thread, but I've thought a lot about going into something else and gotten burned out on trucking enough to take months off multiple times. I'm a pretty smart able bodied guy and I'm sure i could succeed in nearly anything I set my mind to, but In all that time off thinking about doing something else I've come to realize I like trucking (as an owner operator with authority, a paid off truck and a pile of cash in reserve) quite a bit. I go to work when I feel like it (I take winters off mostly now). I go where I wanna go. I'm never gone from home more than one day nowadays and perhaps most importantly I don't have any pain in the ### coworkers or annoying office politics. I worked regular jobs before getting into this business and having to clock in at a certain time on certain days, ask for permission to take days off 6 months in advance and still get them denied and have to put up with #### from a boss just ain't the kind of ######## I'm suited for.
This business has plenty of ########, but It suits me better than a 9-5 and I don't have a family or plan/want to have one. Just my dog and she comes trucking with me. As far as the pension goes I have 6 figures in my own retirement plan (That I don't have to worry about being mismanaged away) and I'm in my early 30s.
Things have turned out pretty good for me, but the people who see where I'm at now and feel envious wanting to recreate it didn't see all the hell I went through to get here. It's not a bad way to go for a single man, but it would break just about any marriage and leave no time to be a proper father to children.
Starting a Trucking Business in Nebraska, advice needed!

Take the $12K and buy Apple stock @ $247.77 a share. Don't touch it for 5 years and your $12K will be worth $60 - $80K.

I don't know that his driver is going to quit and leave his truck in Miami either but its general possibilities that he needs to plan for. These things happen everyday in the trucking industry. Whether he needs a trailer to get into the trucking business is not specific but is more so the norm rather than the exception.Midwest Trucker and Oxbow Thank this. -

As for the insurance side of things, expect 20% down and 10 installments. Progressive and GEICO can give you 16.67% and Canal's mileage based quotes can do 15% escrow deposit. Insurance alone is an expensive up-front cost to get started. I'll sell people $750k liability only to get the MC active, then increase it to $1M and add cargo, physical damage, roadside, etc. Just make sure your agent gives you an estimate of what the payments will be when you increase coverage before you buy the lower coverage!
