Why is it that most of them won't do an inspection on someone who comes in and asks for one? I have heard this a lot. Are they just lazy?

No. But if your going to WILLINGLY go to a coop and let them poke at your rig. Then it makes sense to try for a level 1 and get the sticker anyway.

It’s my understanding that you can’t go in for a voluntary inspection anymore they won’t do them. I got lucky last year and had an officer do one in North Carolina after spending the night at the weigh station

First left me say, I think brokers requiring inspections is a load of crap! Are you getting better rates because you have clean inspections? No your not. I only haul for 2 people, and they don't require inspections and never have. As for you needing an inspection, stop in any scale house and ask for one.

Because the FMCSA hands out operating authority like candy on Halloween having inspections on your record is a quick and easy way for a broker to verify that you are in fact a true carrier and not someone looking to double broker their load.

The reason varies as far as i am aware. My GUESS is sometimes its department policy, sometimes they ligit dont have someone certified to do a level 1 inspection on hand or he is busy already. They could be reluctant to take the time incase someone with a ligitimately bad truck comes through and worried about not having the manpower to do it. Sometimes its lazyness. Sometimes it could be a law in the way. Sometimes they dont want to risk doing a level 1 on request. Finding #### and you blowing up at them when they find crap.

i personally have never worked for DOT and never asked them but those seem the most logical reasons.

Not lazy, few months ago DOT decided that they won't be doing voluntary inspections anymore to combat fraud.
Basically somebody would get a new MC, get a box truck, go get an inspection or two, change FMCSA info that he has 5-10 trucks, then go and commit double Brokering or steal cargo
