Is there a way to determine how shop supplies are charged? Is it a percentage of parts cost, total labor, or combination of both?
I cant figure it out.
I have estimates for two different unrelated repairs.
One estimate is for $4100 the other for $2600
But the shop supplies are $260 and $210 only $40 different.
Btw grrrr since there is a line item bill for every nut, bolt, washer, squirt of lubricant, wire tie, etc... I really hate shop supplies bill.

Have to ask the service department, it all varies shop to shop.
Its a lot easier to charge shop supplies than to account for every single nut and bolt. Can easily waste a quarter of the day walking to the part's counter for piddly stuff like that. -
FL and Pete Dealers charge for full tube, can, or bottle of everything used on the job even if it just a little bit used. Need a qt top off of oil or coolant you pay for a gallon jug. Just a little dab of rtv for a small gasket you bought the tube. And cans of that magical glorious invention called brake clean for every job. Lol.

Those miserable so and sos, that grinds my gears more than anything. Shop supplies billed to the customer goes again what's right. It's SHOP SUPPLIES,,,for the shop. If they billed me for "shop supplies", I'd demand the "supplies" I just bought.
hope not dumb twucker Thanks this. -
Dealers DO have a line item charge for every nut, bolt, etc.. That's probably the number one reason I hate paying shop supplies. Although I have noticed, they are starting to call it misc. Its just a final bend over cash grab.201 Thanks this.

Not always true. I've wrenched at a couple dealers. Never worked at one that charged for every little nut and bolt unless it was OEM.

Worked at a dealer lately? I suppose it's like the Dr. office that charges for tongue depressors and cotton balls, as if the initial repair isn't enough, got to get that 2 sprays of WD40 in there. And their rag/uniform bill must be expensive too. Like that's really going to break the shop. Auto repair has surpassed home repair, and devastates peoples bank accounts, AND, a 2 month wait to boot. I'm getting 4 new tires today for my Jeep, cost outrageous, but probably the last set of tires I'll ever buy, but I can't imagine where this is all going to end. I'm a bit curious what they add to the bill.hope not dumb twucker Thanks this.

Just got 4 skins at Big Os for my Jeep Wrangler, the cheapest were Asian jobs( they all are) $118 each. The biggie, mount and balance( that used to be included) $27.50 each. Okay, and yes, at the bottom, "shop supplies" $4.25. What was $4.25, their cheeseburger? Gas to get the cheeseburger? I find it hard to believe they have it cut so low on the tires and M&B, they have to charge a little bit more. I don't understand how you guys do it today with semis.W923 and SmallPackage Thank this.

I don’t know what shop supplies would be considered in the tire biz but valve stems are not cheap any longer due to tpms b.s. “Mount” is labor for both dismount of old and mount of new. Wheel weight cost should be included in “balance” charge. Valves and tpms are different charge because they are not universal across manufacturers and depending on vehicle make cost very’s. Does your state have a mandatory environmental tire disposal fee along with purchase. Tejas does. Around $14 a tire.
