Anyone ever put an RV air conditioner on the roof of their truck instead of getting an APU? Also would be a good idea to buy a truck that has one of these installed already or would it make resale more difficult?
why would you worry about resale of the truck? Yes there are a bunch running with an RV A/C unit, but they run off of a generator.
I was thinking that cutting a hole in the roof would make it difficult to sell in the future. If its a pretty common thing then maybe its not that big a deal.
If you're thinking about running it off the truck's batteries I don't think you'd have much luck. Any of the units I'm seeing that run off 12 volts look like they are pulling 50+ amps. Your battery group will probably be dead in around 6-7 hours tops would be my guess with 4 batteries.
It would run off a generator. I think you are right it would kill the batteries. Even with a generator its a lot cheaper than an APU.
THIS! There's absolutely no reason these days to go with a loud, inefficient RV roof top air conditioner, even in an RV. Go with a mini split on the back wall. They are much more efficient. I run mine off two 280 L-ion batteries. If you need it for more than a full day/night then just power it with a Harbor Freight remote start generator. It's so simple it frustrates me to think about all the shoddy RV roof airs I had on various vehicles.
This will do it LiTime 12V 560Ah Lithium Battery for Off Grid Solar System Or get these group 31 ones LiTime 12V 140Ah Dual Purpose Marine Starting Battery
It would but the poor alternator that has to recharge it after. Probably have that alternator working at close to 100% output for a couple hours straight.
