Agreed!!! That's another reason why I was asking about this. I have a nephew in his early teens and I'm hoping I can help guide him into a career when he's 18 that keeps him away from those other kids. There's nothing inherently wrong with fast food or retail, but when you look at the kind of people who often work there, and you think about how susceptible young people are to peer pressure, it seems better to push a kid in another direction if you can.

I'm not letting young people off the hook entirely, but there is a disturbing lack of adult guidance today. Parents are just dumping their kids off on the school system, a system we all know doesn't actually prepare students for life and a career, and then assuming everything else will work itself out.

You make good points, but I am hollering from the mountain tops "you cannot raise a kid that only does well if he's in the right environment because EVERY environment is filling up with lazy, entitled losers." It's more important to teach the kid to do what's right even if everyone else is taking the lazy way out, than it is to wrap them in bubble wrap and protect them.

Talk the kid into joining the military. You are forced to learn discipline, you are inspected, no excuses are accepted. Then when the kid leaves the military they have the discipline and GI Bill benefits. Too many kids grow up with an absent father and a rescue mom. That will destroy kids as fast as anything else, especially boys.

Try the military; it's going to improve greatly and soon. He can get a CDL and driving experience to prepare him for civilian life.

I really appreciate the advice. I get where you're coming from on the military, but I definitely won't be recommending it. In fact, I would outright oppose it if he suggested it himself. I'd explain why, but then an invisible clock would start counting down the time until this thread gets locked. I'll just leave it at that.

I get the feeling you are hoping to rescue the kid. You can't, but it's your life. If the kid isn't motivated you can't wave a wand and make him motivated. The one skill I've noticed in the 20-somethings is excuse generation. There will always be an excuse for NOT doing things. Any plan the kid isn't involved in creating will be ignored like he ignores all of the other advice in the world. Why isn't the kid seeking this information instead of you?

If drug use would keep the kid out of the military it will also keep him out of better jobs.

I know of 3 I can think of.
    Old Dominion Freight Line
    Lynden
    XPO
    ~
This is one example of the three:
Dock to Driver Training Program - Lynden
Join Lynden's Dock to Driver Training program and get the training needed to earn your CDL class A license. We'll even pay the tuition at an accredited school of your choice.

He's still on the young side of his teens, not in any trouble, no bad friends or anything like that. I'm looking at it more as trying to be the kind of influence on him that I would've wanted for myself. Ultimately, he can take or leave any advice I give him. It's his life to lead. But it never hurts to have someone in your corner pushing for a good outcome.
