Hello,
I am seriously interested in a 95 KW W900. It has a rebuilt engine that is full mechanical. I am not familiar with CATS at all I have had several BIG Cams over the years and never had any issues with them except I learned the hard way about a complete ####### child engine the dreaded 315HP 838cpl that was pretty limited to adding much long term reliable power so I never touched it. It was always reliable and ran fine as long as you were keeping pace with a non turbo 7.3 Ford…The 7.3 would probably still pull away from it, I also had a non turbo 7.3 back when…Had other Big Cams that would run so strong you really had to stay on top of shifting if you wanted to push them even when loaded. I have been searching for as much information as possible and what I have learned is that overall it is a great engine and the last run of the 3406C full mechanical engines except for the fuel timing is horrible? On the engine tag it says Fuel Timing 9.5 BTC. OEM #starts with 39x40a…It is a 425HP engine set at 1900 RPM. The questions I have is this something I should stay away from or get it and then have the fuel timing set to where it will run strong and be reliable? What should the timing be set at? Is it fairly simple to adjust the fuel timing or is that something that i need to find someone that is close in age with me that knows CATS to set it? Also what should the oil pressure be running at operating temperature at idle if the engine supposedly has around 150K miles since rebuilding? I will be the only driver of this truck as always…Thanks in advance for all of your help and support. I have learned a ton reading on here and have also been entertained by some of the yahoos..

Am I posting this in the wrong thread? Thanks

The 8PN stood alone and while producing 425 it was a slug. The bowls in piston crowns are extremely narrow so that makes doing alot with them a challenge. They don’t accept any timing or fuel. I’m not an advocate on advancing the timing anyway. High side of spec is it. Each serial number break has its compression ratio and bowl size or design. The nozzle spray angle is designed to hit that at spec. Now 3 degrees sure but no more. Also early and later engines can have he exact same compression but completely different bowls and spray angle to work at different timing. There isn’t a one solution fits all and there are lots of different ways to get more just none cheap or easy. If it was a 3ZJ it be better. But it’s not. I’m not downing it by any means just giving my opinion
Thing to remember is for one to be smooth, light fast and pull to the top your nozzles have to match your pistons and those 2 have to match the pump. Different things work well together but you gotta know before mixing and matching. -
Wore Out:
I really appreciate your honesty and knowledge. It sounds to me it is almost identical to the one off short run of the Big Cam I had in the past the 315HP cpl 838. I didn’t know any better at the time yet I soon found out the hard way that it was also very limited to what you could do without basically doing a complete out of frame rework essentially just reusing the block, crank , heads. And replacing everything else to have the correct combination of pistons, turbo, injectors, pump, etc…Essentially changing everything else. I completely understand about having all the right components. Thanks again for helping not just me yet my family also as I’m a one man band over here and looking not to make any mistakes that will cost me and my family down the road. Much appreciated.wore out Thanks this. -
Don’t get me wrong 8PN’s were good dependable engines for the most part. By slug I mean they feel slower than the 7FB through say 5KJ engines. I know guys that run em with no issues. And feel slow as they might they still make to the top of long hard pulls ahead of the trucks that run off from them most days.
They just don’t take modification well. To get one to really feel like most want it takes time and dinero. I have a certain recipe I use to build an engine for myself. The late 3ZJ and 8PN have that base. I don’t inframe to this either i outta frame and get the block right uppers and lowers or you ain’t gonna be happy. Then you gotta set out finding the right pump that’s scarce. So in reality it’s no worse than any other other than living with it till……maybe it’s my age but as long as my mule is making me money I’m cool with itOxbow Thanks this. -
Hey Bud, I just ran across another old 3406C mechanical that I need your help with. It’s in a 1995 truck. Really nice and clean. What are your thoughts about getting a lil more reliable power out of it and how much would you go to? Also would you be concerned about the sleeves or anything else due to its age? Supposedly it is all original and never been opened up for anything.??? Thanks again for your help with these Cat motors. I know there are some great ones out there I just want to at least start out with one of them and not one that is not the best to start with. I’ve been down that road with the one Big Cam I had.

A 350 3ZJ is gonna make me think. I know yiull need a turbo. It’s got an 11 degree pump which is good. I better make sure what piston is in it before I step off in that one
Oxbow Thanks this.
