So, you two think its because of drivers playin a joke? That may be part of the reason, but what about the drivers who use them when they are actually needed? Either way, you give someone something to complain about and they will complain about it. Its like someone who mentioned quite a while ago in this thread about the people who move out by the airport then whine about the noise from the jets.

As Ive mentioned before, my motor, exhaust and jake are about as quiet as it gets so 9 times outta 10, you wont even have a clue Im usin my jake.

Loud pipes are awesome but when it gets to the point where people start whining and moaning everytime you come through town, it really aint worth it anymore.

What about the drivers who use them when they are ACTUALLY NEEDED?? My question: Who are you, or I, or anybody else to say when A Professional should use his j-brake, how fast he should go (governed trucks), how much weight to haul, which lane to run in, what road to use, how long to drive, how long to sleep, ect ect??? In an industry where every employee is a professional from day 1, yet we ALL have to be told when to take a crap........seems to me the only people who think we as truck drivers are "professional" is the drivers themselves!!!!!! And you are 100% right, I'm sure there's people who complain about the sun rising every day, and why do those #### cows have to say moo all the time? But we are talking about trucks, "They stink, their big, slow, loud, and they take up alot of room, but nevertheless...WE ALL NEED THEM! And some of us love them big, stinkin, loud trucks enouph to live in them.

Nobody needs them to pull into a truckstop. or to slow down while they are already in the truckstop.

Agreed.... I think that would fall under good common sence. People who do those kinda things are looking for trouble, which they will find one day. But, my point is when the truck stop or rest area exception is put aside, Is it really that big of a deal?? A jake brake is a part of the truck, just as much as the signal light, do you have to use it? No. Does it make driving conditions safer? Yes. Can you make your shifts faster? Yes. Do you save brakes? Yes. Other than a little noise (which will be gone in a few seconds) Is it really something to get bent all out of shape over? Is it really causing people to go def? No, it isnt....Just as the guy above us stated, "Give someone something to complain about, and they will." Take jakes off trucks, and those same people will find something else to cry about....its just their nature, how they were raised, how they are, and how they think. For people to make such a big deal out of this, to the point of spending tax payers dollars on signs and people to hang them.....All I know to say is they must have a pretty crappy life to let something so petty get them so upset...Live and let live. Guess thats askin to much of some people though.

True. I one hundred percent agree with ya on that one.

Well, I hope Im not jinxin myself, but when Im out on the road, I use my Jake regardless of what some #### metal sign says.

Speakin of which, in areas that dont specify (pretty much everywhere that doesnt have steep grades) jake restrictions, is the law referring to all jakes, loud or quiet or just the people who run straight pipe?

First of all, most of the places i see the signs are either on freeways right before a steep grade (freeways are loud ANYWAY WTF? i used to live 1/2 mile from i-94 and you could hear it all day long, and jake brakes could barely be heard over the rest of it! i lived by a couple of grades but...not real ones), or in small towns on flat roads.

There's kind of no point in using them in the middle of the night in a small town's residential area on a 2 lane road on flat land....

Anyway there is no law that I have ever heard of. However, there are laws regarding the noise levels for every vehicle on the road, and a grumpy cop could theoretically give you a ticket based on those laws. I've never heard of that though.

And those signs arent a law either. They're just signs. But there's always a state law that says you have to obey signs (otherwise they'd be pointless!).

Another way to show how stupid the signs are though...Ever driven a truck with a mercedes engine? The one i drove didn't have an engine brake, it had an exhaust brake....first of all, it wasn't very useful, second, it made almost no noise at all.

Isuzu trucks and the newer Dodge Rams have those exhaust brakes too. Works great on the Ram except that it cuts off way to early but I bet you could have that adjusted. Not so great on the Isuzus.

I've known people that got ticketed for noise but it was loud car stereos and no mufflers. They never got me though.

Yeah but the exhaust brake is kind of obviously not going to be very useful on an 80,000lb truck. ;)
