If it hasn’t had a DPF cleaning recently, might be a good idea. More than 50% of the DOC blocked is a concern. Fuel doser is located at the outlet of the turbo. Should be on the bottom of the pipe.

It's not an epa 2010 engine if there's no def. Check the engine data tag on the engine cover (valve cover). I'll bet a dime you have an 871. Faceplug errors are common so the error doesn't produce a light on the dash. Problem with the early filter engines is they stuck the filter at the back of the truck away from the heat. The emissions package got moved to under the passenger step for a reason. A faceplug error can occur if a rolling regen is interrupted enough times. If you have Cummins Insite you can tell more and can reset the filter and force a regen. It needs to have the updated calibration. Do you know the version? It's truck specific so loading a generic 450hp calibration won't do.
Get an oil analysis.
If the engine isn't pushing coolant into the exhaust from a bad egr cooler then the faceplug error is temporary and can reset itself. With an error the egr valve stays shut and the fueling map changes to a leaner mix to make more heat for the filter. In a linehaul truck it takes a days driving to reset. In the meantime the fuel economy improves because of the change in fueling. Also the engine is more responsive because the egr valve is offline. With the egr operating as normal there's a small hesitation every time you shift because the valve has to be in position before the injectors begin fueling. If you can read fmi spn codes off the dash it will be 5018 11. The 871 is a tinkerers dream. -
Goodysnap Thanks this.

I don’t know what version it has, I tried to do a regen with a snap on scanner, but it kept getting an error so I couldn’t do it. I’ll have to see if I can get someone with Cummins insite to try it.
How would I see if it has a bad egr cooler?
the truck was running up until the new truck came, but I’m not sure how long the fault
Code has been active… I know early emission trucks are usually nightmares, so I am torn. -
Its most likely a CM871. No SCR.
VGT turbo and cold side EGR.
ESN would confirm.
2010 and after is CM2150 and common rail injection. -
-
It is very common for the engine and or truck build date to be a year early from the model year. Nothing out of the ordinary.
Share a photo of the doser if you can as there has been updates and your truck may be equipped with the original. Also share the ESN. -

I think ESN is 79359155 -
