sorry i cant say i agree with the org poster here. my last run before i came home the weight on the load was 43,400 and with full fuel load i was right at 80k and yes i use my jakes on the down grades it helpped save my brakes and got me down the hill. and as for the signs sorry no engine brakes with that load i will take the ticket if the jakes save my ### and possibly yours.

All of the anwers quoted here are correct there are arguments for and against using jakes or engine brakes as truck drivers we should be awhere of other people in Built up areas and lay off the brakes there are other ways to slow down using your gear box for 1 is the best way you just ease off the acclerator and change down however most drivers like to use the jake as well as changing down it all comes down to how experinced the driver is all the learners and other drivers who don't care will use a jake regardless i guess it makes them feel big and tough look at me an my big rig and all the noise i can make its one of those Mars things, the only time i'll usually use a jake is down a steep mountain pass where there are no built up area's . But then i'm a real proffessional :biggrin_255:

YA, theres that 4-letter word again "Professional" Sheesh, forgot to tell about how many millions of safe miles with no ticket, warnings, oos, or write-ups youve had. As I said before "The only people who think truck drivers are professionals, are the drivers themselves. That dang word is makin this job not worth havin. PROFESSIONAL = ESCAPEGOAT Aint that hard to see.......(Car pulls out in front of truck, truck hits car in side, 20 DOT officers crawl all over truck in an effort to find something wrong, truck gets towed, truck gets inspected again, hmmm, DOT officer finds bolt on cab loose, Driver goes to jail, Company gets sued, Company goes out of buisness putting 500 or so people out of work.......all because of that 4-letter word, Professional, you see, things like that dont happen to professionals do they?) Now, perhaps that example was just alittle bit extreme, but get in just 1 accident and see if they dont pour all over you like gravey on biscuits no matter who is at fault!!! WHY?? Because your the professional, and professionals dont make mistakes, because their professional...lol What a joke....I hear terms like, supertrucker, billie big rigger, both of which I have NEVER heard anybody claim to be, But, whats the first 3 letters in PROfessional spell? At any rate, your a TRUCK DRIVER and NOTHING more....your not doin anything I couldnt take a 16yr old and have doin in 2 weeks!!! (or less) I cant understand why anyone would want to take that title on. That title will bite you before it helps you. IDK maybe it makes some feel "special". Im not attackin ya, I'm just sick of hearin that word, to me its like saying "I'm a perfect driver, and I never make a mistake" at which point I have to throw the B.S. flag. Its just a term, one however, you or no one else could ever live up to, so why take on the responsibilities of that term? I need some help understanding that if theres any "PRO's" out there willin to educate this Billie Big Rigger, or Super Trucker, or what ever terms yall use to describe a Trucker you cant compete with...lol...just a joke, dont get to heated on me now, lol. I'm just an old man stuck in my ways I guess.

I am a professional and everyone makes mistakes, even professionals and if and when any of this happens to me, I and only I will know the truth as to what happened or what caused it unless it is mechanical failure that i can not see and if the dot finds that failure then they did there job!! even if the dot or who ever says differently as long as i know I am a proffesional I will act as a professional regardless of anything else..
