Been a rather uneventful last couple weeks. Had 2 Port Saint Lucie runs that my wife met me at the hub. Had dinner both times then headed back. That round trip is 740 miles and can’t be done in one shift. Well, it could be done if all the stars lined up right, which on 95 through Florida, never happens. Also did 4 Charlotte round trips and 3 Orlando turns. Right now I’m getting ready to do an Orlando turn.
Will be home next Wednesday night. I have final consultations with my surgeons and setting up when this will be done. It should be done in April sometime. Recuperation will take most of the summer, then the wife and I are going to the Middle East for 3 weeks in October in celebration of me hanging up my trucking sandals.
I always second guessed my idea of paying for extra insurance and other things in case of something like this. Over the years I always contemplated not signing up for things like short term disability. I did. And paid extra to cover 90% of my gross salary for 12 weeks. I paid for the best health coverage I could. I also took out a plan that pays me $10,000 directly for major surgery. And then I signed up for Medicare part A when I turned 65. So my hospital stay will be covered for 90%. My point in saying this is to let anyone know, that you can have a successful driving career as I did, not have anything go wrong and as the time goes by, something out of the blue happens that could financially bankrupt people. I knew my time to retire was approaching, this issue came straight out of left field. I’m just thankful and very appreciative for my wife telling me not to cancel those extra coverages I have been paying for. I’m at a good place, I have the support of my wife and family, my employer is on my side with this. He even offered to pay me my 3 weeks vacation early. I said no, not until this is all over with. He does know I’m retiring, just not when. Life is good, but of course there’s always hiccups along the way.
Be safe everyone. Happy first day of Spring!Last edited: Mar 20, 2025

The Security minders as they call them are on all the tours to make tourists feel more comfortable. The government started that after 2015. It's really just a placebo. They were all cool guys, i spent a bunch of time talking to them ( the ones who spoke English anyway) We never felt uncomfortable in any way. I'd go back any time.jarhead0311, Bumper, JohnBoy and 1 other person Thank this.

I’d rather visit Egypt with their armed guards than Overtown in Miami with the only guns you see are held by the locals.jarhead0311, runningman0661, Rugerfan and 6 others Thank this.

Here's one of the guys. All dressed in suits with a machine gun pistol under the jacket. They spend a lot of time helping tourists with aggressive vendors.
