Winch bar extension

If you need a winch bar extension you maybe doing somthimg wrong. reevaluate your securement

 

I went to my local metal supply store and bought a 1” diameter by 4’ long black pipe(it’s what they call it). You be surprised the difference compared to a regular winch bar. I used my small wheel grinder and made grooves on one end for grip.

 

The binder end of a winch bar at least is a one-way gate. If you put a pipe on it that's definitely going flying if you screw up. I've seen them fly 20 ft.

 

I know one thing, don’t ever get your finger caught in the winch when tightening a load. Wow that hurts. Good way to lose a finger nail.

 

And your technique
Grabbing a half link to move the binder to less than 90 degrees and insuring the chains are not twisted are two important things that many teachers gloss over during open deck training. That is why ratchet binders have become so much more popular. Some company drivers purchase some of their own (marked for personal use).

 

I’ve ONLY used pipe bars through out my years of flat bedding. The winch bar with that funny end on one side, I cut those off, there to dangerous. Now about those bars flying 20ft, that happens to individuals that have no idea what there doing. Yes, I’ve had them fly once or twice but that was during my learning curve(over 42 yrs ago). You can go on and on about this and that, like they say, “to each their own”. I’ll stick what works for me.

 

I carry 4 ratchet binders and 8 snap ones. My preference are the snaps

 

In my young and foolish days a couple guys held a "snipe toss" competition and the winner won a 6 pack for a toss at 37 ft over a flat of heavy plate stacked 30" high.
