Trouble is, you can't always see them. I was on 400 in Kansas late yesterday, it got real dark, windy, and some of the heaviest rain I've seen.i kept going west because I checked radar and knew I'd be out of it soon. Just stayed slow enough to see. But I thought, if there's a tornado, I guess I'll know when the truck becomes an airplane. If I saw a funnel cloud, I'd surely take cover.hope not dumb twucker Thanks this.

True but there is a diffrence between a nado sneaking up in the dark or setting down near you. And driving into an active funnelhope not dumb twucker, mjd4277 and Long FLD Thank this.

2013 Moore tornado - Wikipedia
Not as powerful as the 1999 tornado but it was still powerful enough to devastate Moore and still had a high death toll. Because it was so well documented more lives were saved because of the 13 minute lead time for people to get to safety before the storm hit!hope not dumb twucker and Arctic_fox Thank this. -
About 2 years ago I got sideswiped by what I later found out was an EF-1 tornado while on US-35 near Bidwell,OH.
A tornado warning was issued for Bidwell,Adamsville,Rodney and some of the other towns. I thought if I could make it up to near Jackson I would be in the clear,as they were outside of the warning area. Unbeknownst to me however the storm had shifted its track. Worse,it was rain-wrapped.
I pulled over at westbound rest area outside of Bidwell where I started seeing horizontal rain and winds buffeting the truck! After it passed I discovered that I got hit by winds from the northwest side of the funnel. There was some debris left by the tornado on the highway which indicated the tornado’s path. Surprisingly, truck wasn’t damaged nor was it laid over. But it’s still a sobering experience and reminder.hope not dumb twucker and drvrtech77 Thank this. -
As @Arctic_fox described, this tornado was extensively covered by radar, helicopter, trained weather spotters and news weather forecasters, which gave people time to get to safe shelter. This easily could’ve been a mass casualty event!Last edited: May 20, 2025
