Marine plywood is a special plywood layered up with rot resistant wood like white oak or teak for example. The adhesive used in it is also a special type. I'm not sure how much you paid for that but it sounds like you got a bad round of "marine" plywood. That actually sounds like someone got the advertising wrong in the store and mistook marine ply for indoor ply. I have never heard of marine ply doing that.

Correct the glue is waterproof. The plywood is made up with different wood than conventional ply. Conventional ply consists of mostly doug fir, a bit of spruce and cedar. Don't get me wrong, those woods are very rot resistant but not so much waterproof. Marine ply is made up of rot resistant and waterproof woods like teak white oak. And yes they are more careful to not get as many knots in there.

Mdf isn't always the cheapest. People use it because there are so many lies out there about it.

All mdf is good for is painting. It's very easy to get a excellent finish on it. It's also extremely flat and accurate so that helps. Worst "wood" to build with though. I hate that stuff.

Fellas in the towing business ought to have first hand experience of what could go wrong. Amazing.
