Starting Schneider's orientation next week doing the 1 week on 1 week off gig. Would like to hear from other drivers who have been doing that for a while. Eventually plan to switch to 2 weeks on and 1 week off and then stay there. Specifically would like to know what miles I can expect per week, when you get paid for that week, how much a Canadian passport costs, and any other knowledge ya'll can send me about this particular job especially from someone like me leaving hometime out of Charlotte, NC. Is there plenty of parking for my own vehicle at that terminal while I'm out. Thanks in advance. Start orientation March 9.

Only thing I can help with is the passport. You can get a passport card (looks similar to a drivers license) for $45.

With it you can travel by land to/from Canada and Mexico.

    Google
    U.S. Passport Card

Twisted Turtle; I'm on the Home Run. It's good for me. But I'm on the 2 weeks out, one week in thing. Thats the first I've heard about the 1 out, 1 in thing.
I pickup my trucks in Woodhaven, Mi., but my DBL is in Gary, In., and is part of the Chicago truckload team, #2 I think it is.
The biggest drawback to Home Run is the slipseating, IMO. SNI has some real pig drivers. I've gotten trucks that I had to clean the windshield/windows 4 times, just to be able to see thru them. And we have some that could care less about you having to wait to get DOT repairs done before you even make yourself available, repairs that should have been in the works before they signed out on the truck.
On the other hand, the majority of the trucks I pickup are reasonably clean, and repairs made before you even pick it up.

Now, on the Canadian passport, unless you're a Canadian citizen, no way you'll get one. A U.S. one likely though, LOL. Really, I knew what you meant.:biggrin_255: I believe the last cost I saw for one was $95. Could be wrong.
Miles, usually not bad. I can mostly count on 2500-3000 per week. My last time out was terrible though. Did two restarts in one week. One I blame on the weekend crew, the other on an O/O, or I/C, who showed up 15 hours late on a load going into Ca. I really wasn't very happy on either count. But both those examples happen hardly at all.

The Charlotte OC is pretty decent, plenty of parking for your POV, has a cafe that serves your "Southern delights", catfish, hushpuppies, etc. Caca on that catfish though, don't you guys know that's a bottom feeder?LOL.

You get paid weekly. Direct deposit, check, or on your Comdata card. I always have them put $200 on my card so I don't have to do the advance thing.

Geez, what else? I think I may have answered your questions, if not, ask again.:yes2557:

Thanks to Red House and Johnday for your replies. They helped alot. Yeah, I figured I'd run into a few slobs for other drivers with that " Hurrah for me and the hell with you" attitude. I myself, am a real stickler about all glass and mirrors being clean. Probably been laughed at a few times in truck stops for washing the windsheild on what looked like might turn into a rainy day. The miles sound real good to me especially after my last job where I averaged 1400 miles per week. Kept warning them I wasn't gonna live on that. Guess they didn't believe me 'till I quit. If I can eventually switch over to 2 on 1 off, that will be perfect for me and plan to stay there. Not really planning on retiring 'till I'm 66 but of course that's not entirely up to me. Any info about the road test in Charlotte would probably help 'cause I know very little about the roads there as I've only been in NC for 2 1/2 years and have little need or desire to go in there. If you think of any other info I could use please let me know here. I'll be checking this thread everyday until I go in next Sunday. By the way, the town I live in is right on Lake Tillery with 2 other big lakes nearby. Lots and lots of BIG CATFISH!!! Thanks again, Twisted

Oh man, you guys eat some nasty stuff down there. Double caca on that catfish!!!!LOL

My roadtest consisted of maybe a 10 mile drive in the Green Bay area. The instructor was very decent. I'd never driven a straight 10 before, and had to think about downshifting more than usual, but it worked out. He told me to drive like I normally did. Didn't take but a couple of times and I was floating like I normally do. Now everything I did was after dark, so a little more alertness was in order. He had me back into a spot at one of the outlots. SNI has a bit different approach to hooking a trailer to me. After all was said and done, I still use the method I've always used. They'll show you what they expect. I still don't see why they want you hook up the airlines and pigtail before you engage the pin. The roads around Charlotte aren't bad, but the 4wheelers could have a bit more sense. But that's pretty normal where ever ya go.:biggrin_255:

Thanks for that info, JD. I don't know how much difference it would make to hook up your lines before or after hooking the trailer except to cause another trip back to the cab. I suppose you could say it's to eliminate any possibility of damage to the lines. BTW, did you know that shrimp and lobster are considered the bottom feeders of the sea? Nothing like about an eight to ten pound catfish filet rolled in batter and fried to make your tongue slap your brains out. Did I say that? Nevermind, I'm too twisted to rate a brain. I grew up in Virginia and graduated high school in Arizona where we have lots of BIG STEAKS so I can enjoy all of the above. Sounds like Big Cove will back me up on the catfish, though. What can I say? It takes a Southern boy. LOL
