I'm going to CRST Malone as long as they approve me which shouldn't be an issue. I've been out of flatbed for almost 2 years and it is time to get back to it. I tried refer and van. I hated both of them. I will keep you all posted. We will see soon what they are all about. I've hauled just about anything you can haul on a flat, stepdeck, stretch or RGN trailer and have dealt with agents, dispatchers, and brokers. I don't think that I know it all but pretty sure I know a little.

I know I'm a bit behind on this one, but I thought I'd register my sentiments and share my experience with CRST Malone...

To start of with, I should let you know that I have about 6 years of flatbed experience--all types. But as a general rule, I hate hauling coils. I only mention this because if you plan on working for CRST Malone and the company providing you with any freight, that's what you're gonna be hauling. A few steel makers, and Alcoa, are the only real customers that the company has.

I should also mention that I was in the Lease-Purchase program.

The guy who said that you should get ready to find your own freight was right. And because you have to do that, and so many others have done it before, it's made it so that Malone can't even go out and solicit freight from the same customers that the brokers do. Be aware though, some of the brokers that you call will not load Malone trucks, period, or Malone would do the things insurance-wise, and contracturally that will make it so those brokers will do business with the company. I dealt with brokers in the time that I worked for them. And I've heard it all from those brokers and CRST Malone.

I had no problem getting freight from either the agents or brokers. But the agents' freight didn't pay anything. And after a while, the company cut me off from booking freight with brokers. This happened repeatedly.

While they were letting me take brokered freight, I made BEAUCUPS of money! There were MANY weeks that my REVENUE was $10,000 or more. And months where I took home $12- or $14,000. I primarily did that by hauling LTL freight and working my ##### off! But when Malone would realized that I was making all that money (pronounced: didn't really need them), they'd cut me off. Ron Maynard, who was the terminal manager in Eldridge, definitely loved to do that! So then I'd go for weeks or months without making anything--barely paying the bills, so to speak. It was almost like he and the company wanted to created stress and conflict with me and the other drivers...

When I wouldn't make any money, they'd blame it on me, because I didn't want to run in the midwest hauling coils. I like to go a lot of different places, you see.

I never had any problems with equipment--truck, trailer, or securement. But if anyone is planning on working there, I'd like to point out that they do have used securement equipment. You don't just have to take whatever they give you.

I never had any problems with settlement errors. But then again, I was able to see mine every week, at least online, and I always looked them over very carefully.

You have to realize that your "dispatcher" is mostly irrelevant. In my case, they only thing he ever helped me with were the confirmations with the brokers. He was a nice guy, but useless as tits on a boar hog. I suppose that's true most the time, at most companies.

These days, they're supposed to have the company load board available online to any contractors that want to use it. I'm sure the agents are still involved, and will take a cut. But in combination with the load board, the agents, and some other online board, like GetLoaded.com, or other, you can probably make a little money.

This is not a company where you can expect to follow all the hours of service rules and such, and expect to make anything. It would be best to think of EVERYTHING with this company in only short-term ways. So if you go to work there, get what you can get while you can get it, and then get out. Don't expect any long-term relationships or potentials.

Before working with CRST Malone, I thought I knew some stuff. Now I know I know some stuff, but only because they actively worked against me so hard.

    Good luck to all!

    DR

I can bring home 1.5 times that in the same amount of time if the stars are lined up just right, and I don't own a truck.
