The seniority based jobs like mine, Wal*Mart, and tanker jobs have almost no turnover after a year. These jobs are not for everyone but there is a reason people stay once they figure out they can handle the job.. They pay you for everything and pay you well..

Wanna keep good drivers?? Pay them..

That's true to a point. Pay is a very good motivator up until a person has all of his primary needs (housing, food, car, insurance, retirement) met. After that people start looking for more than just pay. What good is it to make 100K a year if you have to work 52 weeks and never have time to spend it?

I've talked to several Wal-Mart drivers pushing the 100K annually mark who work 5/2 or 4/3 regularly and are very happy. There is one I see at the bar I go to, he's in there every Friday night for dinner with the wife. His run is Tuesday till Friday every week.

Thats true if you can be content living a modest lifestyle and saving for retirement. Too many simply buy bigger houses and fancier cars. Then they get used to having that kind of cash and have a harder replacing it when it comes time to retire. Happiness isn't about how much money you make above the minimum to cover basics. Its being content with what you have.

Most LTL drivers are home daily and I know Wal*Mart drivers are home most of the time. I work a lot less overall than I did running OTR and make twice as much.

Definitely some truth to what you say though - I like the money on line-haul but there's gonna be a point where I have to bid an early city start time to have a normal life again. Nice thing is all I have to do is sign my bid sheet and not change jobs for a better schedule..

That's a plus. My advice to you is save money like crazy while you are young. I was fortunate. I worked for the YMCA for 30 years before getting into trucking. I was paid a salary but they do something few companies do. 12% of my salary went into the YMCA Retirement Fund. Nothing came out of my check but 12% of whatever I made went into the fund. I would not have been disciplined enough to save that in my 20's and 30's. It has set me up with a nice retirement whenever I decide to take it. You are in that part of your life where every dollar you save will grow tremendously over time. Max out that retirement plan while you are young.

When i was with Auto-Truck you got $32 to sleep in the sleeper. i need to explain:
They didn't want you in the sleeper because it was a new truck, they wanted you in the hotel. IF you elected not to sleep in the hotel, (you had to make up an excuse---like you stayed with friends/family or in a truckstop), then you got subpay---$32 at the time. i'm not sure if they still do this. i only did this a few times as the hotel was too good to turn down. In retrospect i should have toughed it out more and gotten more $$$.

    2) AMen---you should try to save like heck when you first start to work---this is not easy. But if you can manage to save 50% of your check or even just 10% consistenly, you'll be set.

    American-Trucker Thanks this.
