Yesterday I was talking to my home care nurse. She was asking me about Nevada. I remembered something that happened many years ago. I picked up a General Mills load in Joplin, headed to a Walmart DC near Reno. I had plenty of time, so much time that my fleet manager was trying to get my appointment moved up. He was not able to do it. So when I got close to Winnemucca, I decided to stop there. I stayed there for almost 48 full hours. Then, with about 5 hours before my appointment time, I headed west toward Reno. About 30 minutes west of Winnemucca, I blew an injector and lost a lot of power. I finally got road assistance, but they had me towed back to Winnemucca. By the time another driver got there, the load was already late. If I had gone on to the Petro at Reno, even if I lost the injector, we might have had time to get the load delivered. I never forgot that. Part of this job is planning. Personally, unless I was totally out of hours, I would not consider taking a 10 or a 34 in a drop yard. In this situation, you don't want to run out of fuel. You start doing that, and trash in the bottom of your tanks can get into the fuel system, much like a reefer will. I know this situation has passed, but I would advise giving up the 34, driving to the truck stop, filling the tanks, and trying again later on.
